I work with very small mill cutters at times, and if the table hiccups, 'bing' either the part or more usually the cutter is history. Controlling the slop or lash in the table drive is everything here. that's a good point Dave , when i was thinking backlash in the cross feed shouldn't matter i was ...

if you question the accuracy of the existing set up, consider a high quality acme screw Makes me wonder. Is the idea one that, perhaps, is intended to avoid the effects of backlash?. Harold what makes you wonder? you quoted my recommendation that, speculating that if the problem is accuracy in the ...

John, to what advantage? a ball screw offers a number of advantages, but it does leap out at me what they'd be in this application. Backlash is one for example, not sure why reducing backlash would matter for the cross slide. And like Dave said, the cutting force could easily drive the screw. Unless...

whether using the compound or taper attachment, I usually set up a commercial taper in the lathe between centres (sometimes you need to put a centre in the taper and rest it in a centre drilled hole in the headstock) and use an indicator against it. Its far from perfect and the indicator has to be a...

the problem with a lot of portable hoists is that they are designed for applications where the supporting wheels can easily roll under a bed or car or whatever. Since seeing that thread I like the die cart - gotta be the most flexible solution to the problem. lift to height adjacent to machine and s...

thomas, A radius can readily be turned by what you describe; mapping out the x and y coordinates using Mr Pythagoras’s theory, turning a 'digital ' version of the curve (lots of little steps) than blending with a file. I made a graduated dial for the leadscrew but the compound would work equally wel...

Bad news is that you need a fixture for each of these operations.... .
you're right, however everything but the air bearing can readily be shop made. then again the cost of an air bearing will prove your point :D

if the spind bearings are good, wow, for a $100, way to go
