Re: When one hobby fixes another...

Hey. Very neat. I don't know why the broken one was painted green but that doesn't matter. You know stuff and that is what matters to the one you made.

Okay. now I see the code. It was off screen.

Re: Self centering vise

I don't understand things which I haven't had direct involvement. I try and fail but it is interesting to know why these vises are selling fast. When stephenc mentions "cherry on a mill" , I think that is short for a "Cherry head" which is a certain unit. Volstro and others made similar attachments....

Re: A Bygone Era

I knew it was a Johnson Bar but didn't know if the handle was newly made. Either way, they are great things. Look at the wood grain and understand what it signifies. We used to call it "pin oak" around here and maybe that was wrong. It is super tough wood when the grains are right. Yes "jaw breaker"...

Re: A Bygone Era

In a way, I would like to delete the above. I can consider because I already know that "style" plays an important part to a machine. That's just the way it is. Many of the great machines could have had flatter surfaces but the engineers knew stuff. You folks are way above me but an ellipse or curve ...

Before you decide to heat treat or harden it, decide which you would rather have wear out and have to replace again in the future - the key or the quill!
That is a particularly good point.

Re: Never enough time

Don't know where to begin, Dave. Maybe empathy . Everything had a reason or we wouldn't have done it. Man. Time isn't the way it used to be. BUT ! You give us hope and that stirs. Yes I have another fridge in the garage taking up space. My old Roper could die, you know. All it needed was a different...

Re: Reworking 9" SB tailstock KEY REMOVAL

Good link.. I didn't know why a key would be removed when it is definitely required for a lever tailstock. Heck, I didn't know it was an angled pin . No wonder they become sloppy. I can see where the levered tailstock used for MT# 2 drills would really wear out a small pin key. Hopefully we can find...

Re: A nice way to store reamers??

The only thing which could strike and harm another cutting edge would be another one. I wouldn't trust an envelope as it may have acid or degradable substance. Yes I agree that reamers should be separate.

Re: A Bygone Era

They managed to make an elegant product without the benefit of industrial designers. There is a lot which makes sense in the longer view or is it the short view? Anyone can say about the engineering before it went to specs, before it went to actual many steps. Then there were different companies wh...

Re: Need Grizzly/Jet/Frejoth cross feed gear suggestions?

This topic was presented some years ago. There were even pix of the inside of the apron. I don't mean to confuse again but it may be that the second rail (gear to worm) which wears out, is confused to the actual one driving the cross slide. Hey we need to get this nailed down. These are decent workh...
