Re: Paint question
Harold, the paint mask is a low stick adhesive vinyl. Also I use a base coat / clear coat system, with this the base color is applied first obviously, the base paint is a very thin paint layer that itself is pretty much not that tough. That is why you spray a clear coat over it which adds rhe protec...

Resizing cylinder bore
I have an older RRSC American that needs the cylinders resleeved. The plans I have call out for a 1.75" bore. The newer ones call out for a 1.5" bore. What would be the pros and cons of boreing the new sleeves down to the smaller size. Yes I know I will use less steam. I also plan on makin...

Re: paint job
No, he meant Alodine. Alodine is a chemical etching, protective coating that allows paint to stick to it. I see the problem why your paint did not stick, you used mineral spirits which will leave an oily film, use acetone instead or even denatured alcohol. Also with the acrylic enamels make sure you...

Re: Winnipeg Electric Company Streetcar 356
Dianne, what really works good is plain old yellow wood glue and follow with a pneumatic nailer and for the small bits get a micro pin nailer. They are like a 22 gauge pin that can be about 1/2" long.

Re: Fabricating A Steam Dome - Take 2
If you use poly filler (Bondo, which is a name brand) for minor imperfections should be fine. One thing you want to make sure first is that you sand the metal first before apply the poly filler. At work I play with some high temp poly filler, it is I think rated for 600*F I will have to find the spe...

Re: new West Valley baby consolidation now in steam
Kyle, the engine originally ran on coal, the original owner was getting up in age and had started switching it over to propane. We kept it propane although we had to reconfigure the burner to get it just right. And yes the domes are filled with lead, which gives great traction on these little engine...

Re: new West Valley baby consolidation now in steam
Kyle, yes there was O-rings in the pistons, that's what my friend Matt had in his when he got it. Also the 2" cylinders are steam hogs but they will run on very little pressure. We have since sleeved the cylinders down to 1.75" which offered a nice balance for the engine. Hope this helps. ...

Kyle, the engine were designed as a group project where each person was in charge of making a particular part/s for the engine. Although a couple where sold to help fund the project.

Re: HELP! LE American eccentric straps
Dianne, the rods that go to the top of the regulate reverse while the bottom regulate forward. Do you by chance have any plans for your American? They are valuable in helping setting up the timing of the engine, as they will get you set up at a starting point.

Re: Finger nail polish
Are we talking nail polish it self or nail polish remover? Because nail polish remover is acetone not lacquer thinner. Nail polish is lacquer based paint.
