Re: marking tools

You can buy colorants for epoxy. Pick a good one and mark tools with that. You can get really creative and mill a small spot and fill it with color. Fairly hard to remove, at least harder than most paints.

Re: Which grease to replace old specification?

Well known to people with old British sports cars having manual transmissions. They called out GL-4 lube back then. The problem is some gear oils started saying "suitable for GL-4 & GL-5 applications", but I was never sure if they were safe to use. Then there was a spec for limited slip rear ends, t...

Re: Which grease to replace old specification?

Obviously lubricants have to be chosen for the application, but in this case it would be hard to find a grease that wasn't up to the job. I seem to remember being surprised that one of my Kluber high speed spindle greases also mentioned open gears as an application. Seemed like an expensive way to g...

Re: Drilling UHMW

I use that technique for all sorts of thin and hard to grip parts. Works great.

Re: Gear Cutting

FWIW, I make most of my gears out of Delrin. They hold up great, can be cut faster and the gear cutters stay sharp longer. I'm sure there are places where you really need steel, but maybe fewer than people think.

Re: Drill shank hardness

you can fix that with a torch and bucket of water. Not HSS. Hardening HSS is a not a process available at the typical Home Shop Guy. I make cutting tool from broken HSS bit but the only useful part is the web which basically limit the design to small grooving tool. Opps! You're right. Probably only...

Re: Drill shank hardness

I've never seen an HSS drill bit with a hard shank, cobalt included. If making something else, like a cutting tool, you can fix that with a torch and bucket of water.

Re: Balancing grinding wheels- my new page

That sounds like my SG wheel! The only saving grace is that somebody else paid for it for a specific job. Once I balanced it and redressed, and you have to make sure to get it fully dressed, it worked well. IMO, not any better than my white wheels, but I don't do long run production grinding, which ...

Re: Balancing grinding wheels- my new page

After talking to a machinist friend that I've worked with for almost 40 years, who's done a lot more grinding than I have, has never balanced a wheel and who thinks there's a good chance I'm out of my mind, I've changed the intro and justification a bit. Be sure to hit your refresh button if you rea...

Re: Balancing grinding wheels- my new page

The data output speed on those Witmotion units is low. I wouldn't trust them for vibration work. Now I have to look up gel cell wheels! edit- never mind, that's my SG wheel. Dressing is important for those and I probably don't have the best diamond for it. I detest most Youtube videos as they take m...

Re: Balancing grinding wheels- my new page

Saw those, no idea how much they cost. My guess is they could be a bit tricky to adapt the 4-pass technique to, but with some index marks it might not be too difficult.
