Harry, I agree that this is THE modern method as you desccribe, but "how" was it achieved back in the 1800's with hand tools available at that time? Al, They were making machine screws like that in the 1700's never mind the 1800's. The tools would be far cruder than todays and the machine...

Hello, I make my screws on a lathe, then cut the slots using a slitting saw of the right thickness on an arbour on my mini mill. All-- Does anyone know anything about heat coloriing steel? I have been trying, without great success to heat color various thicknessess of mild steel. The only luck I have had is with 0.125" steel from Lowes, where I buy most of my stock steel stuff. I cannot get good results with either 0.25...
