Re: LALS 8mm movie from the mid 60's

I put down the wrong date for the start of the eastern expansion. (Long day, late night.) Construction began in late 1979 and we poured the concrete pad for the driveway entrance gate and mainline crossing in January 1980. That was the first project for the eastern expansion,.... I was one of those ...

Re: LALS 8mm movie from the mid 60's

Yes, that is Frank Mann at 0:27 running his Mikado. Looks like Doug Alkire is also in the film.... running his B&O Pacific.

Re: LALS 8mm movie from the mid 60's

Since the Disney Loop is in operation, the film is from no earlier than 1966. The eastern expansion was begun in late 1980 with the golden Spike ceremony held at the 1981 Spring Meet. The construction of the western expansion began shortly after the Spring 1981 meet with it's Golden Spike ceremony h...

Re: Baldwin Narrow Gauge 4-4-0

The California State Railroad Museum has a good number of Baldwin drawings in their collection relating to the narrow gauge (4-4-0) NPC Sonoma that's in their collection. The museum also has drawings that they made of some of the Sonoma's parts and sub assemblies as part of the locos restoration. Co...

Re: LALS Film 1967

These older movies are timeless. To see LALS before track expansions, all the trees and shrubbery went in. It's just a wild guess, but suspect the UP Northern was from Chet Peterson at RR supply and the GS4 Daylight was Dick Priest's (Little Engines?). Haven't heard from IBLS in a long time... Have...

Re: 1" U in 1/4" copper tube

Depending on the degree of bending, one might need to anneal the tube, fill with solution, freeze, bend, rinse, repeat....😀 Nope. Regardless of what they use as a filler in the tubing of the instrument.... Cerrobend, pitch, or ice, they do the bend in one move.... Even complex compound curves. LL

....They also freeze the ice to around -60 or -70 degree range..... I don't have dry ice in stock either and don't know how else you could get -60 or -70!! Table salt is more finely grained than most sand.... Try sealing one end of the tube then fill it FULL of table salt instead of sand. Pack the ...

Re: 1" U in 1/4" copper tube

Keeps the ice from cracking. They also freeze the ice to around -60 or -70 degree range. Cerrobend is also used for their bends. Some makers use pitch.

Re: 1" U in 1/4" copper tube

A trick that makers of brass musical instruments (trombones, trumpets, etc.) use to bend tubing is to make a solution of water and soap... Like Ivory or Dawn dish washing soap for example. They pour the soapy water into the tubing, freeze the tube, and then bend the tube around a form to the radius/...

Re: Scaling Drivers

3.5" is the common thickness for driver tires.

FYI... Union Pacific FEF2 & 3 class 4-8-4 locos had 80" drivers with 73" centers. Chesapeake & Ohio L2 and L2a class 4-6-4 locos had 79" drivers with 72" centers.

Re: Scaling Drivers

2.5" is a bit on the thin side... Figure the tires at 3.5" thickness. Example: A Big Boy has a driver diameter of 68" with the center 61" making it's tire thickness 3.5". Yes, you can scale up the drawing if needed.... But all you would have to do, tho, is lengthen the spoke...
