Re: early live steam
Not nearly as old as the models shown in the video, but the photo is of an engine I recently picked up. I have no history on the model other than it is 4-3/8” gauge and is about 18” long. It has an unusual straight link valve gear and is mostly well made. The boiler shell is very thin but is outfitt...

Re: Brand new 4-4-0 American
As to why build a Miller versus LE or Allen, to me it was one of simplicity and then cost. If built as designed, there is only one eccentric and not much in the way of suspension. Fine for a home track, something short, they were probably fine. Their diesels were quite simple as well. I had quite a ...

P1010701-600x450.jpg P1010703-600x450.jpg This engine has been for sale for quite some time by the Obnoxious Antiques guys. The jacket hump is unusual, but would seem to match the placement seen in the engine for sale at the beginning of this topic. Hard to say what the frame looks like, it may hav...

Re: Brand new 4-4-0 American
This looks like it might be a Miller relative for sale here in NJ:

Re: Brand new 4-4-0 American
In looking at the Miller drawings, the boiler shape is per the drawing. Sounds like the valve gear is per Miller as well. Would probably need to see more as to the suspension and see if that is as designed. Pretty rigid design.

Re: 15" Gauge live steam 4-4-0 Boiler, piston castings, wheels & tender trucks
RyPN has been known for years as a site for key board warriors with little current hands-on experience. The topic title was typical of RyPN which is why the site in general is seen as a joke today. That aside, I know from personal experience how useless a stamp can be, but in this case, the stamp an...

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question
Berkman, it all depends on where one wants to run their engine and the state you are in. RMI went to a code boiler at some point. I am not sure what drove that, but they did. Public running (not talking a club track) of a boiler this size in NJ requires a code boiler. For my application, a code boil...

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question
I have been gathering some pricing to address the issues with the boiler. There are two primary issues: 1) Its too long for my chassis - to address this by a R-Stamp shop would be in the $6K range, but that includes some NJ required changes such as the addition of a fusible plug. Based on experience...

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question
My experience is that there is a significant cost to engineering and materials associated with a code boiler. Better off, in most cases, repairing or modifying versus new when it comes to a code boiler.

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question
For what it might be worth, I am waiting for price from a code shop to not only shorten the boiler, but to also replace the firebox. Fairly sure at this point that the box has an issue so might as well fix it properly. This will ensure that the water flow issue is addressed and that the idea that th...

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question
Four boilers were built by Wasatch for RMI in two batches in 2009. The AI signed off on the design on the inspection sheet for each boiler including the fit up.
And if four were built, and one returned, where are the others?
Stay tuned for some actual measurements.

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question
I'll get some measurements and let everyone know. Really what people are saying here is that the State inspector was in cahoots with Wasatch which I find hard to believe.
