Nice piece of work Steggy, and thank you for taking the time to document and present it.
When I get off my rear end and start cobbling something together, I’ll be happy if I can achieve 50% of what you’ve captured in this thread.

Re: EMD F7 in SCALE
Could you give us an example of something you did a half-ass job on? ;D
Impressive work! Very nicely done.

Re: EMD F7 in SCALE
Hi Steggy,
I did recently re-read the whole thread, but I can’t recall if you mentioned how you coated the frame - is that powder coat?
-Andrew
EDIT: If you drag the unit down slow enough with a heavy train/grade, will you encounter wheel slip?

BDD now Steggy, glad to see you’re still at it! I’ve given the thread another well-deserved complete read thru.

Without back checking, I believe I picked up Ecuador as the location, and 20 years since abandonment. The ‘trestle’ looks like a washout to me. Being a jungle, I’m surprised it’s as passable as it is.

How about a 4cyl long block? Could call it a stationary engine.

Re: Grand Scale Freight Yard Aspirations
<snip> Those are lighters used to move freight around NY harbor. Areas without carfloat service had freight offloaded in NJ and delivered via these. I don't know why some had the funky cupolas, but they did. There were also carfloats that did not have the cars moved off via a floatbridge, but inste...

Re: Visiting the WF&P in St. Louis
Yeah that’s what it looks like to me. Usually the outer race of a ball bearing is supported by a bore all the way round its circumference. This install puts a point load on the outer race. But like I said, it may not change the bearing life enough to matter, and they look pretty easy to replace.

Re: Visiting the WF&P in St. Louis
That style of retaining the bearings can’t be good for bearing life, but it may not reduce it enough to matter. Neat to see some of the big stuff!

Re: First serious steam engine build.
Actually, the heat conduction through the tubing is a small fraction of the heat resistance. The heat transfer rate from the air to the boiler metal surface is by far the dominating factor, which is why turbulent air and radiant heat have such a large effect. The next biggest resistance is heat tra...

Re: First serious steam engine build.
At some point increasing surface area will compensate for the lower thermal conductivity of the stainless; I wouldn’t hazard a guess as to how much more area would be required though. Would be an interesting CFD experiment…
