Re: Looks like I will be busy with a clean and refurbish job
Well it had to come apart to fit in the S10 under the cap, as well as just so it could be lifted in. I can't carry a lift AND the machine in there even if I take the cap off. And the machine with base weighed about a half ton, two guys were not lifting it safely, nor one guy (me) getting it out agai...

Re: DC motor help
The way the "brushes" that make contact to the rotating part are set affects the allowable rotation. if the motor will rotate either direction, the brush o=position may be a compromise. If the motor always will go one way, as a treadmill does, the brush position (angle etc) can be optimize...

Re: Looks like I will be busy with a clean and refurbish job
J tiers, was it that dirty that you thought it was an Atlas? Nearly...... I saw it on CL and knowing I did NOT need it, I posted links to the PM antique machinery area..... A week later the voices in my head told me to look for it and call if the ad was still up...... so I did. Then the voice...

Looks like I will be busy with a clean and refurbish job....
I bought this a week ago, and since it was owned by two successive drag racers/chassis builders/welders, it needs some serious work. Lots of it is nearly as dirty as railroad undercarriages. Some needs re-scraping, some parts need to be replaced. I'll be making most of them. Good thing I got it at w...

Re: RPC - Turn it off / Leave it on
An RPC, or any other motor, typically draws about 30% to 40% of full load current at idle. But not to worry, the "power factor" is so low that the actual power "wasted" when it is idling is low. possibly 5% to 7% or so of losses. Not going to break the bank, but worth turning off...

Re: End Mill Sharpening
There are various systems for sharpening that are capable only of sharpening the end , and others, like the one in the pic above, that should be able to do the end and the flutes. I so far have found it cheaper to not bother. They go in the "needs sharpened" box, and when I get tired of lo...

Re: Drilling square holes.
yes, the original Watts drill system includes a guide. They still make a number of different drills for various numbers of sides..... Patent is, IIRC, as of about 1917. In the video, the guide must be internal to the head. The drill appears to have a guide section as well as a drill section. The ori...

Re: Another "wottizzit"
I have a no-name about like that. 3 x 4" approx. but it is totally "in -scale" with the mill table. I put an alignment strip each way on the bottom to help hold it on the mill table. Have only used it a couple times, but it is handy enough. T-slots are so small that only small work fi...

Re: Lathe Mounting
Eh......... a 1/4" top is a drum head...... yeah you shouldn't have vibrations just in general, but the top is thin regardless. Yes, a thicker top will reinforce the machine to some degree. If you search over at the HSM site, a fellow posting as "artfulbodger" just had a concrete benc...

Re: Reaming question
Taking carbon steel, the 100 rpm seems to come out OK on their chart. 5/8" = 0.625" and 0.625 x 3.14 = 1.96 " per rev. that's a bit over 6 turns per foot. Taking their suggestion of 15 to 60 f/min, at 15, then 15f/min x 6 turns/ft = 90 turns/min = 90 rpm. Highest speed given is 60 ft/...
