Re: Kozo Heisler Lubricator Question
I did the clubs boiler calculations preparing for inspection. Operating pressure is supposed to be eighty pounds. The calculations came in at 79 psi. Granted, I could have messed up the calculations. The next day another man at the club compared Notes and had the same outcome in his calculations Wi...

Re: Topic For Discussion
You know, you see and hear this all the time. Generally from clubs where grey hair, or no hair, seems to be part of the membership. I think lots of clubs are closer to death than they think. The Montreal Live Steamers are doing incredible things in 3-1/2, 4-3/4 and 7-1/4. The members don't seem to d...

Re: Kozo's New Shay cylinder cock assembly
Dave - really nice work on your locomotive.
I've made the first Shay, and am thinking about all of the others, but finishing up a British 2-6-0 I started a long while ago. The plans are like night and day.
Kozo's plans are fantastic, and the locomotives go together well.

Re: Is the live steam hobby in decline?
I'd agree with the youngsters posting above - the hobby is changing, and lots of "kids" get it. Questions for us oldsters: 1) Does our club web site work on mobile devices. (my club? nope) How many people under the age of 50 use anything that'll display flash content?? Facebook presence? &...

Re: Question for the European live steamers
I've got two "European" locomotives, with another on the way. You don't want to pull with a hook and chain coupler - use these for decoration, and replace it with a solid "eye" with hole vertical. Use a solid tie bar between your locomotive and your riding car. No buffers require...

Re: Question on 3.5" Rob Roy drawings
Heres why I thought the dimension was incorrect... DOH!!! The horn blocks need to be on the inside of the frames, not the outside! At least you found it now, and, some UK plate framed locomotives (thinking Brittania here) had the hornblocks half in and half out, to try and minimize frame flexing. B...

Re: Coal Issues
Some thing's don't scale well- in full size, to light a coal fire, the descriptions I have (mostly Scotch Marine) are to start with a decent wood fire (up to about 16" by a full stove kind of fire), and then add coal around the outside of it, get the coal alight, then spread the lit coal on mo...
