Re: Setting the compound at 0* or 30*

Hi There, Like others have said, most people just leave the compound at whatever angle they last used. Setting the compound at 30° (or 29.5°) is convenient for threading. Another compound setting I use is 84°. This gives a reasonably close 10 to 1 ratio in that a .001" movement of the compound will ...

Re: Mill tramming device

Hi There, When I mill a surface, say 9" long, the thickness deviates from one end to the other by about .002"; not good. I have to agree that this issue isn't the result of the head not being square with the table. Tramming is important but it won't fix this problem. I would have to ask: "how are yo...

Re: HEIGHT Gauge question

Hi There, A while back, I had a nice 711F "Last Word" indicator calibrated in tenths and it had a sticky point in its travel. I sent it in to Starrett's repair department and they refused to repair it (stating that they didn't have parts for it and therefore didn't repair them anymore). They did off...

Re: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hi There, I see that so far, no one answered why Santa would bring coal to bad little girls and boys. To understand why it was coal, one has to realize that this "tradition" was started back in the 19th century in Europe and at that time, the most common fuel was coal. So, if you were bad, you didn'...

Merry Christmas and may Santa fill your stockings with coal!
Do you know why Santa put coal in stocking of the bad children?

Good Luck!

Hi There,

I am in accord with you on that. I have been a fan

Re: feeling stupid

Hi There, I thought I had the only copy of that book left in existence. I found mine at a library book sale, but they only had part II. My two volume set is set-up as follows: Part I contains - Safety, Measuring Tools, Bench Work, The Drill Press, The Lathe, Forge Work. Part II contains - The Shaper...

In my copy (fifth edition), the section on drilling and
"flat drills" is in Part I; on page 182.

Good Luck!

Hi There.

Apparently one has to be a member and login in order to
view the add. Not being a member (and not looking to
join just to view the add) makes it pretty moot.

Good Luck!

Re: PB Blaster is Snake Oil

Hi There, Living near salt water, I been using anti-seize on fasteners for a long time. The most problematic are exhaust fittings and I've lately switched to a high temp anti-seize (infused with Nickel). It is supposed to be good to 2600°F and so far has worked on the exhaust manifold stud/nuts on m...
