Re: Build a steam engine with no machining experie
Due to high overseas shipping costs Maxitrak recommends only 2 sub-assemblies to US customers the first would be the complete rolling chassis w/cylinders rods, etc, the second would be boiler, pipework & sheetmetal (cab, etc). This breaks the payments into 4 as well. A 4 sub-assembly breakdown (...

Re: Insurance Question
I show a full size traction engine. Membership in the EDGETA (Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Assn.) includes liability insurance. It isn't a huge policy, but it is good for all the shows I go to as long as they are notified in advance. About half the dues are for coverage. It comes at a much lower...

Re: Massproduction of steamengines
As most of you know, I sell the Maxitrak line from England, Their locos come in several styles, but share many similar components, just as suggested, they even come in choice of gauge (4-3/4 to 7-1/2). Maxitrak is also willing to build several variations of their "lil Jo" plantation loco (...

Re: Fuesable Plugs More info please
Traditionally the filler was "pure" tin. I think they now add other shtuff to get more precise temperatures, and resist reaction with the water. I have talked to a few people who have made their own for models with a drilled bronze plug and soft solder under the theory that it was better t...

I know a fellow who has 5 full sized traction engines -- 2 Hubers, an Aultman-Taylor, a 20th Century, and an Avery - All kept in good repair. OTOH he doesn't have many other bills (They have a non-electric home, by choice) Whn they show multiple engines he runs one, his wife runs one, and they allow...

Re: You sure that's a 273 and not a 318; I ...
Yep, in '66 the 318 was still the old Poly block boat anchor. The 273 LA was available, but not particularly popular in the bigger cars up to about 68 (not much difference between it and a 6 cyl except cost.) The Dart/Baracuda 273 4 barrle was a very different beast than gramma's 273 2 barrel - bigg...

Re: One word - Insurance
If a rider on your homeowner's insurance policy is a nonstarter, then your "best bet" for basic liability coverage (not a whole lot, but better than nothing) in the current climate is probably to join the EDGE&TA (Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Assn). As long as you provide them wi...

Re: Miniature steam engines
These things are rather 'spensive to move, and all that bouncing on long road trips isn't particularly good for them. I do get a few requests for it to make more public appearances, but the promoters usually balk at the idea of paying for the haulage. It resides at the Portersville. Pa. ( www.catfis...
