Re: Left/Right, Port/Starboard, Engineer/Fireman
Tim, as a retired Lehigh Valleyy RR engineer and later with Amtrak and Conrail, where I was a Road foreman of Engines….the engineer sits on the right hand side of the locomotive and the fireman holds down the left hand side. On diesel locomotives, because some run long hood forward and some don’t, t...

Re: 1” scale air brakes
I guess I’ll have to try and get down there with a steamer in 24 to polish the rails some!jscarmozza wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 6:02 pm Thanks Keith! There are only a handful of guys running 1” and 3/4” at NJLS these days, never saw a track brake. Thanks again, John

Re: 1” scale air brakes
Then they weren’t constructed properly. The brake lining material is softer than a wheel and should do no damage to aluminum rails. Instead of just banning track brakes, your club should just inspect visiting equipment just as you should inspect wheels to make sure they have a taper on the tread and...

Re: 1” scale air brakes
Does the Ridge Live Steamers have a 4-3/4” gauge track?
John is talking about a 1” scale locomotive. I didn’t recommend a track brake for 1. - 1/2” scale.

Re: 1” scale air brakes
John, the most efffective brake for a 1” scale riding car doesn’t go on the trucks at all. It is a track brake. My riding car has a hand lever that engages a 4” x 6” plate lined with brake lining material. When you pull the handle that big pad bears down right on the rails and is the most effective ...

Re: 1” scale air brakes
Just as my opinion…..where you need brakes is not on the locomotive in 1” scale. Where you need the brakes is where the most weight is located. In my case it is wherever I am sitting! If you try to stop a train with passengers with just the locomotive brakes, you will slide the drivers and effective...

Re: Blind driver
why would the tire be thicker? The whole idea of a blind driver is that without a flange the tire will ride over the railhead.

Re: Removing boiler/smokebox
On one of the ancient 3/4” scale locomotives in my collection, the smoke box has about 80 tiny hex bolts around the periphery. I was REALLY hoping that they all weren’t in use to hold the front to the smoke box! On close examination I saw very tiny center punch marks on four of the hex bolts. I remo...
