Re: Making a silk purse out of a sow's ear, or...

Hi, Scherr-Tumico did not exist until the early 1940's, so it can't be from the '30s. You have a tossed together mashed potato set. I wouldn't even say the wood box is matched to the base. At least my S-T box from the late 80's doesn't match that style. And the base looks to be a newer style also. M...

Re: Walk Away?

Hi, I've run, repaired, and re-controlled 3 of these with AH HA! controls back in the day. There are reasons Bridgeport went bankrupt. And these mills played their part. Last one I saw sold, it went for $1500 and it ran. Unless the owner can provide paper that says he replaced the ball screws recent...

Re: PM45 table nuts

Hi,

Are you sure it isn't a 1"-8 thread? Basic diameter is .919" for a 1" 8 pitch series thread.

Re: Pulled the trigger on a mill

Hi, Yes get a set of R8 collets. A 6 piece set is all you really need. That would include 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4". Those are the most commonly used shank sizes. You could eventually a a 5/16" collet, but it isn't all that important to have. Watch for...

Re: Horizontal mill overarm for Bridgeport head

Hi, My experience with DOM tubing is that it needs some sort of clean up to get it really round. This may or may not be a problem for your use though. Most of it also is a bit undersized and any cold worked steels off the rack often are. Again, it depends on your needs. As far using tubing to mount ...

Re: looking for my first mill

Hi, Prices of machines vary so much by region these days it's pathetic. So spend some time looking and studying what is generally available to you in your area. Relax and remember it's not a race to get something just because. :) I like my G0704 as a mill, but it isn't my first choice for drilling o...

Re: BF 20 V vs. BF 20 LV... aka...G0704

Hi,

The only difference I'm aware of is that the BF-20LV models have a longer bed. 18 /7/8" of x axis travel verses 14" for the standard BF-20 models. The V designate variable speeds. The G0704 is a long bed version.

Re: adjusting a live center.

Hi,

The only adjustable live centers I've ever used allowed for tightening up of the bearings to eliminate the chatter you seem to be experiencing. How to go about adjusting your depends on the model. Check with the manufacturer for directions.

Re: New lathe or old Iron??

Hi, Like real-estate, it's all about location, location, location. How long can you afford to watch and wait? Days, weeks, months, or years? Where I live you will wait years to come across a good used piece of old American iron at a fair price. How much rebuild and repair work do you think you can d...

Re: Centex Mill rebuild

Hi, Nice looking little machine. I wouldn't have guessed it being made in Fort Worth either. But it's sometimes amazing what little hole-in-the-wall places did. I wonder if the sealed bearings everywhere where done just because they were cheap and common to buy for the manufacturer. I think taper pi...

Re: Truth About Endmills

Hi, It's hard to say with the information you have provided so far. So with a bit of patience, we will play the 20 or more question game and try to help you figure out what happened. :) First, mill spindles are supposed to run very true....if they are in good shape. Think less than .01mm runout. But...
