Sounds like a technique issue. Too much pressure being applied to the slide of the caliper and holding the standards out at the tips of the jaws.

Glenn-- Would you start off with a small HSS lathe blank? Just tune up what is there. No real need for another tool bit. You can grind a square tool bit into a triangle shape if needed. Your tool holder may work with round HSS tool bits as well. I use a similar setup for grooving tools and just tun...

Small Vise Grip pliers should hold it for grinding.

Try not to stick the boring bar out past the tool holder any farther than needed for rigidity.

Hanging it out as far as you have it can induce chatter.
