Tool Post
Hi: Not an authority on toolpost, but have used both the QC (aloris/dorin) and the 4-way/turret type, as well the ole rockers. Both at home and work. The turret types was a big production increase over the rocker style - after all, 4 tools already in place verses 1. And the rockers were slow. Then t...

Finishing 12L14
Could use some recommendations on getting a really nice id finish on 12L14. Will be boring for O ring seal. Have turned quite a bit of 12L14 on the od, using 130 as the cutting speed; it ends up with a really nice od finish, just turning and a little 400 grit sanding/polishing. At work will be borin...

Q: Need to make a bushing for a single cut broach (keyway)
I need to cut a internal 1/2" keyway. The id of the hub is 1.752 dia for a 1.750 dia shaft. I have turned the broach bushing, and now I need to mill the slot for the broach. Can not find - it may be there, just can't find it - the dimension specs in the machinery handbook. How does one determin...

My intent is to Level without Bolting to the floor. I know you folks know all this. Except for some of the realy small table top lathes, a lathe (bed) needs to be level (no or minimize twist). SB lathes, for the most part, were shimmed at the base, then bolted down. When you needed to re-level, you ...

Updated info: Purchasing Vert Mill
The company manufactures about 4 basic industrial/commercial pieces of automated equipment. The machine shop supports this in machining of parts. Material ranges from CR, HR, SS, Alum and brass. Not all pieces require close tolerance, some we have to try and keep as close as possible (the old mills,...

Help Solve a Diliema on Purchasing a Vertical Mill
Situation: At work - we have several old variable spd and one step pulley bridgeports, we are completely manual milling, and it looks like the owner is inclined to purchase a new mill. We sat down this morning looking thru catalogs, yeap there's a lot of choices. Bridgeports, Clausing/Atlas, Jet, Gr...

Any SB10L w/bent leg cabinet owners
I am restoring one, and I am presently on the cabinet. Wondering about leveling the lathe. There are flat plates welded to the 180* bends. Their not thread, for adjusting screws. My larger lathe has means for leveling, and most that I've encountered provide some means of leveling by means of jack sc...

Gear Pressure Angle
A short info: I have a Lathe Gear Cutting Attachment - "Millerette" made by the Production Machine Tool Co, Cincinnatte, OH. Unfortunately, it only has two gears with it. I've restored to use, and since I need to tool up on gears, I figure the best way is to cut my own (geat some experienc...

Question: Determining Gear Pressure Angle
14 1/2*, 20* or 25* tooth angle?????
Gear in question is from the 40's - 50's era, so can pretty much rule out a 25* pressure angle.
Since different press. angles do not run together, how can one determine what the pressure angle is?????????
Any help will be appreciated.

Grizzly Lathe
I have a Grizzly 14 x 40 industrial (3hp, 3ph), it's about 4 yrs old. Wouldn't you know it, bought mine and they introduced a newer one somewhat nicer. Grizzly is a little pricey. With taper attachment was around $4500. MMM, Enco had the same (picture wise anyway) for around $3200. Called Grizzly, t...

Passing Thought on "How Did They Do / Make That"
I'm 55, and have restored several old pieces over the years and seems like with each one, there's always been parts/pieces that I've wondered, "how in the world did they make that"? Restoration has not been soley machinery. Read an article not long ago on cement. Romans figured out how to ...
