Painting the K-4 Boiler Jacket

I have recently completed painting the detailed boiler jacket on my K-4. After installing the pieces of .025 jacket I removed and reinstalled them after painting the backside of each piece. I used Spray Max 2 part epoxy primer available in a spray can. The hardener is released with a button on the b...

K-4 Detailed Boilder Jacket

I have just finished the detailed boiler jacket for PRR K-4. Based on my copy of the original print the prototype jacket was made up of .065 sheets of steel fastened to the boiler with machine screws. I fabricated the 27 sheets from 24 gage steel and attached them to my 13 gage sub jacket using appr...

Re: The boiler jacket for the K-4

Dave G. and Mike M. - thanks for the positive comments. This part of the project seemed overwhelming to me at times as I struggled at first to make several of the belpaire firebox jacket pieces from copper using formers. I ended up going with a predominantly steel jacket. If I had to make a living a...

The boiler jacket for the K-4

For the past few months I have been bending, pounding, grinding, and fitting the sub jacket for my K-4. The sub jacket is 13 gage steel(approximately 3/32 thick). On top of this jacket will be placed a 22 gage steel detailed jacket made up of pieces as on the prototype. Those jacket pieces will be f...

K-4 Boiler Mounted

I recently got the boiler mounted on my K-4. The boiler was built by Mercer Locomotive Shop. I have started making and attaching the parts for the detailed boiler jacket. I am following processes illustrated by others on this site who have applied a detailed jacket. I anticipate the jacket will requ...

Re: Foundry Pattern Making

Hi. I noticed in your original post that you were looking for information on making a pattern for locomotive cylinders with cored ports. I will first say I am not a pattern maker or expert of any kind. I just have strong desire to build a steam locomotive. Pictured is a pattern I made along with the...

Re: Scaling Drivers

Are you building a PRR locomotive? If so there are prints available depicting the prototype dimensions including hub, rim, counterweights, etc. I currently do not have access to my prints otherwise I would offer you the dimensions. The prints are available from the Pennsylvania State Archives. Here ...
