Re: Scaling Drivers

Are you building a PRR locomotive? If so there are prints available depicting the prototype dimensions including hub, rim, counterweights, etc. I currently do not have access to my prints otherwise I would offer you the dimensions. The prints are available from the Pennsylvania State Archives. Here ...

Re: will spring steel mill?

I have used both spring steel and phosphor bronze for the leaf springs on my 1.5" scale PRR K-4. I used spring steel for the main leaf springs and phosphor bronze for the lead truck as I found the spring steel leafs to be too rigid for the lead truck. I had little success trying to machine spring st...

Re: Etched Parts for the K-4

Thanks all for the compliments on the parts. Wolfgang - the vehicle is a 17 year old Honda S2000. Bob - The dry pipe cover you are referring to was made from two parts. The upper flange was rough cut from sheet steel, drilled. and then bent to match outer radius of the smokebox. Final outside and in...

Etched Parts for the K-4

I have been working on some of the etched detail parts for the K-4. My etching kit was purchased from Micro Mark. In addition to the etching kit I bought developer, additional etching solution, and resist covered copper plates from Graphic Chemical and Ink. I followed a lot of Trainman's(Dave S) vid...

Diamod Plate Material

I have for sale a sheet of 1.5" scale brass etched diamond plate. The sheet is 18" by 24". As noted on the photo there has been a piece cut from the sheet. The dimensions of the removed piece are 2" by 13.5". The diamond pattern is etched and the overall thickness of the sheet is approximately .062"...

Marker lights for the K-4

Hello live steamers. I have not posted anything in awhile. Between some traveling and health issues I have not been able to make as much progress as I had planned on my K-4. My goal is still to finish the exhaust stand, blast nozzle, and smokebox with all detailing by the end of the year. As part of...

K-4 Smokebox Detail

I have been working on the smokebox detail on my 1.5" K-4 this summer. My plan is to complete the remaining detail work on the smokebox as well as install the exhaust stand and blast nozzle by the end of the year. My intent is then to spend 2018 working on placing a detailed jacket on the firebox an...

Re: The face of K-4 #3855

Thanks all for the compliments. Dave - the photo of the 3855 that I am using for my model does show the two small steps on the smokebox front. I have pictures of two additional prewar K-4s hanging in my shop that have the steps. As a note according to my reference sources the original 3855 rolled ou...

The face of K-4 #3855

I have completed most of the work on the smokebox front for my 1.5" K-4. The front was machined from a cast iron disk and the door from steel. The handrail posts were manually machined on my craftsman lathe. I have no CNC so I ended up calculating approximately one hundred and fifty X and Y coordina...
