Re: D valves not seating - how do I fix?

This is a new locomotive. It's been run on air just a few times. This was my first attempt to run it on steam.

D valves not seating - how do I fix?

I think the D valves on my Little Engines C.P. Huntington are not seating. I tried running it on steam for the first time a couple months ago. I got on board, opened up the throttle and the pressure quickly dropped to near zero and the engine didn't move. I finally got around to trying to find the p...

Re: Progress on my Little Engines "C.P. Huntington"

Here is an update: Several things have happened since that photo was taken. I now have my own house with a garage that can be used as workshop. No more borrowing space from friends and relatives. The only problem is that the garage is unbearably hot in the summer limiting the time that I can work on...

Re: Little Engines American - Steel Boiler

I was surprised to find photos of my boiler when I was visiting this site last week. I fired up the boiler for the first time today and was able to bring it up to full pressure in about 15 - 20 minutes using compressed air to run the blower. There was a bit of difficulty when I switched the blower o...

LBSC locomotive "Ancient Lights"

In the introduction to LBSC's Tich book he tells a story of driving one of his locomotives - a 2-2-2 named "Ancient Lights". The text seems to imply that this a 3/4" inch locomotive but I can't image that something that small would be able to pull an adult passenger. Would an engine of this size and...

Steam pressure gauge question

I have a pressure gauge designed for air compressors on my engine (I've run my engine on air many times but have not yet steamed it up). Can I use this same gauge with steam or will I have to purchase a pressure gauge that will withstand the heat and moisture from the steam? Thanks for any help that...

Re: How to thread very short piece of pipe?

Thank you for all your advice. What I end up doing was RET's suggestion of soldering the nipple to another piece. I started by turning one end of a short piece of brass hex stock down to where it would slip inside the pipe. The nipple was then placed on the turned down end of the hex stock with the ...

How to thread very short piece of pipe?

I'm using a very short piece of pipe called a close nipple to attach the check valve to the side of the boiler. Unfortunately, the shortest nipple I can find is about 3/4" long and that leaves the check valve hanging out over the middle of the running board instead of up against the boiler. I've tri...

Re: Riverside Live Steamers Spring Meet

Here are a few of my pictures from my visit on Saturday afternoon. I had a great time, my
only regret was that I didn't get to ride behind the Big Boy with the Challenger double header.

Re: L.E. American rod end problem

The main rod of my C. P. Huntington has the same dimensions as your American. The main rod on my locomotive is an aluminum casting with a bushing pressed in. The strap was made by bending a strip of steel to the proper shape and has miniature bolts to hold it in place. The attached photo is a tad fu...

Re: HELP! LE American eccentric straps

I just noticed I made an error in my post. It should have read as follows: Dianne: The C.P. Huntington I'm constructing has the same valve gear as the your Little Engines American. I checked my engine and found that the straight rods are on the outside and connect with the TOP of the link, the rods ...
