Re: Miniature Locomotive Outtakes
Thank you so much, Dick, for locating and re-posting the former YouTube video. Referring briefly to previous comments about Now vs. Then , another striking difference noted from those earlier days is the engineer's bare hands! I am from the wonderful era of that video, and we never wore gloves then ...

Re: Newbie question about materials
I have had excellent service from OnLine Metals for both large and small sections of cut-to-size stock in a variety of metals and plastics. If you use that company, buy as much of what you need at one time to save shipping cost, possibly even duplicating some actual requirements to allow for the ine...

Re: Copper Tube Issues
In a similar situation more than fifty years ago, before stainless steel tube was widely available to hobbyists, my father wrapped his copper blower tube with heavy wire for protection against erosion by cinders - as mmentioned by Bill. Use of S/S obviates that precaution now.

Re: Interchangeable Valve Gear
The Piliod Company, of which Abner Baker was Vice President, was patent holder and marketinmg agent for the Baker Valve Gear. Originally invented for use on traction engines, Pilliod exploited the basic design for a limited variety of "bolt-on" products to accommodate a wide range of valve...

Re: Firetube Boiler Project - Leak Troubles
II have been following this thread from its introduction but was not able until now to make a comment. Without getting into what do do about your current predicament, perhaps a suggestion might help avoid it in the future. I was taken by an ititial statement regarding the rate at which the boiler wa...

Re: Steam chest pressure.
Hi David -- Your suspicion about the efficacy of the original superheater coils seems to have been correct: I rather wonder is the throughput of the Superheater insufficient? The additional coil, a somewhat marginal increase in supeheater area, resulted in a remarkable increase in steam chest pressu...

Re: Steam chest pressure.
It's been 72 years since I studied thermodynamics, so I have to watch my step here. What you say about saturated steam at various static pressures is correct. but those are steady state values for two different circumstances not involving the flow of steam. However, when saturated steam is extracted...

Re: Steam chest pressure.
Obsrvations of 20+ years ago mentioned by Bill were based on steam chest pressure measurements with a cab-mounted gauge temporarily connected to the top of one steam chest. The locomotive was a 1" scale 2-4-0, 80 PSI boiler pressure. Starting on level grade, pressure immediately shot up to boil...

Re: tie work
Congratulations, Dan, on your continued major effort to replace wood ties with plastic. It will inevitably demonstrate the falicy of dominate thinking in some clubs that plastic ties are "too expensive." What will those misguided club officials do when their sacred wood ties inevitably rot...

Re: 3-1/2" Gaugers - Smokebox Access
My 2.5" gauge B&O B-18 Tenwheeler uses a threaded stud on back of the round herald disc in the center of the smokebox cover to hold the cover in place. The "captive screw" engages a removable cross bar spanning the front of the smokebox. This arrangement permits rapid removal and ...

Re: Forming boiler sheets for three 3/4-in. scale Virginias
Andy -- Superb workmanship and a big boost for smaller-scale live steam. Thank personally, and in the name of Humanity; not much of this sort of skill and dedication comes along these days in any field, so congratulations!
