Re: Band saw blades
For the OP, I would recommend 2 blades for just about any home shop need on that saw. #1-10/14 vp bi-metal for 90% of small cutoff in steel. #2-6/10 vp bi-metal for larger sections and aluminum. Learn the tricks like tilting the part in the vise, proper oientation to cut angle, etc., etc. My favorit...

Re: Chandler Duplex boring heads
Can be used as stated in spro's post, but main function in addition to boring, is facing (think bearing seat shoulder), undercutting, snap ring and o-ring grooves. A beautiful piece of tooling that also has the ability to set tenths. In fact the head is capable of better accuracy than I can measure....

Re: Using Marv Klotz's utilities with Windows 7
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Marv for these utilities that I've used for many years now--starting with windows 95! I left windows after win 7, but I still use the utilities on Linux via a program called Dos emulator. Shows you how timeless a piece of software can actually be! Cone, cam...

Re: Help needed for a part
The drawing is understandable, though the end view should be on the upper left or change the bore to dashed lines and bold the 3mm thick "tongue" lines. As Steve says, need a tolerance. That long tongue could be a problem in terms of straightness and perpendicularity. A machinist can't re...

Re: How do you tighten a hole ??
For some bores that have been machined a few thou oversize, you can shrink it with heat. Slowly, and evenly heat up the area around the bore, to where it turns blue, they walk away, and let it cool down slowly. I've reduced 4" and larger bore diameters by as much as .006". Important that ...

Re: Newbie Introduction and "A Tale of Two M Heads"
The N-06 bearing locknut can be more easily removed if you first remove the pulley bearing housing/oil distribution casting from the aluminum pulley housing. I made a wrench for mine with about 20 minutes of lathe and bandsaw time.

Re: Newbie Introduction and "A Tale of Two M Heads"
Greg, Nice job on the restoration so far. I would advise you to just swap out the heads. Head castings were honed to within a couple of tenths fit with the hard chromed quill, i.e. custom fit. There's always the chance that you have two heads with exactly the same bore/quill diameters, but I wouldn'...

Re: HO HO HO A Gear Cutting We Will Go !!!!
There's a program (GEARPA) on my webpage which uses a method from "Machinery's Handbook" to measure pressure angle using home shop equipment. I wrote it as an experiment to see if such measurements could be done without exotic equipment. A professional machinist friend gave it a try and p...

I made 10, and could use more. Also made a 2" extension which I've found extremely useful.

Re: Drilling/Tapping Acetal or UHNW plastics
Mr. Ron, The only way I've ever been successful making a single anti-backlash nut is with an undersize tap. And successful was debatable. As Harold pointed out, H limits define how far oversize a tap is ground at the pitch diameter. The most common tap in the size you are talking would be an H-3 and...

Re: Bandsaw blade alignment question
Dave, I've built several horizontal band saws and learned very quickly that the twist needs to center on the back inside corner of the blade if the saw has tapered, flanged wheels. I thought like you that intuitively it should twist about its center line, and built one saw that way. I could never ge...
