Re: Drilling holes in brass, should I pilot hole?

The term most often used to indicate modifying a drill point for brass is 'dubbing'. It is quite possible someone unfamiliar with that term thought they heard 'dulling'.

Re: Hot glue gun

Get one with trigger feed (with some you have to push the stick through with your thumb!)
If you can find one that has a positive nozzle shutoff, get it. All the rest drip & dribble like an old man (I resemble that remark)!

Re: cutting the column on a drill press - how much to cut?

Notice that the OP hasn't even acknowledged the cautions? He's got his mind made up and will forge ahead regardless. It might not come apart for a while using very small cutters, but unless he sticks to tiny endmills cutting wood and plastic, it will. Then he'll disappear. . .

Re: Shaft Set Up in Mill

Doesn't even need to be a sacrificial parallel. Just set it on top of one, tighten the vise and tap the parallel out. If your vise is in good shape and the shaft is of uniform diameter there will be no problem holding the work for such minimal machining.

Re: Taps and Dies - balance between cost and quality

Best bang for the buck: Hertel. Many are USA made, all are great quality. Freest cutting: spiral point.

Re: ER40 Collet Holder with 1.0" Straight Shank Drawbar Thread

At the very least, take it to the hardware store and find a bolt that fits! The chinese don't always adhere to the western world's standards, so the smart thing to do is MAKE SURE.

Re: Best tap for hard steel.

There is no tap I know of that will cut threads in truly hard material. Inclusions are often as hard as the ball-bearing they likely came from. My prediction is that you'll break as many taps as you try, and discover a whole new vocabulary in the process. Threads can be EDM'd if its important enough...

Mine came that way too. I bored it straight through to 1". Much more handy that way.

Re: 5c or er40 collets?

Maybe it doesn't matter in gunsmithing, but I often need to grip a very short section of a small part. Doing that is awkward to impossible with an ER because you have to have same-size contact at the back of the collet. I cannot see how the ER system could be any faster either, except maybe when a s...
