Re: diamond wheel grit?

Thanks for the good information . Exactly what I was looking for. 95% of my grinding will be smaller brazed-on carbide. I've often read that grinding anything but carbide with a diamond wheel was a no-no and couldn't quite reconcile that with grinding a brazed-on carbide bit. Relief grinding beforeh...

diamond wheel grit?

Have long wanted a diamond faced wheel for grinding carbide tool-bits. Finally decided to spring for one. What would be the best grit for a wheel to be used for grinding small carbide tipped toolbits?

electric motor problem

My neighbor brought me a small pancake-type air compressor to fix. Said "it just hums". The capacitor was plainly visible and looked pretty beat up, so I plugged a new one in and turned it on. Same problem, just hums. Checked cooling fan and it wouldn't turn. Got a long-necked punch and ta...

Re: OK I'm Cheap ! SO !!

amen to all the above. I'll spend an hour at the lathe or mill any day to make a part that costs two dollars. So what if the cost per hour is exorbitant....my time is free...and I ENJOY IT. I'm also one of those guys that will drive a mile out of the way to save a penny on a gallon of gas just to spi...

INFORMATION NEEDED ON OLD WESTINGHOUSE WELDER

i have an old Westinghouse stick welder (bought cheap at auction) that I need some information on. It is a 130 amp AC machine, marked Type 13-C, Style 1457005. None of the taps where you plug in the leads are marked, and their arrangement is rather strange and does not suggest what the amperages are...

Re: self-sharpening setup for wood planer

thanks to all for your input on the planer blade problem. After reviewing all proposed solutions, I pretty much abandonded the idea of an on-board sharpener and focused on the jig idea. What I finally ended up with was a hold-down jig. Don't have pictures, but I'll try to describe it. Looking the si...

Re: Looking for a Mill

Just thought I'd put in my input on the subject of hitting the draw-bolt to release a morse taper from one of those small mills. I too cringed at the thought of abusing the bearings with such a method. My solution was to weld up a spool sort of device with a yoke at the top to slip in the gap betwee...

Re: bearings and old grease

I have an old Logan that had been sitting idle for a long time when I got it and the bearings in the headstock felt a little rough with hesitation spots. I pried the seals out a little bit and applied a little WD40. Didn't take long for them to smooth out, then I worked in a little 20 weight. That w...

Re: what is this???

I did a little more investigating this afternoon. The device had a thin coat of rust and crud on it, so I chucked it in the lathe and held some emry cloth against it to clean it up a little. In a few seconds this popped up....Pratt chuck co, Frankfort N.Y., and under that #14. I sprayed the jaws wit...

Re: what is this???

I realize it is very hard to visualize from my description, but it's the best I can do. I'll see if I can work up a sketch or maybe I can get someone to take a picture and help me post it. I very much doubt that is a one-of-a-kind....too much well done machine work....also one of the Jaws has a numb...

Re: Modern kids

Amen...everyday I see evidence that most people today....of either gender...don't have a clue about things mechanical. However, I am convinced that we are not all wired the same. My wife of 50 years is completely non-mechanical, however she is quite intelligent and readily grasps an explanation of h...
