Re: Why is my lid jig a miserable failure?
Thanks, guys. My jig sounds like a dead-end project. I should have checked with you guys before starting, and saved the fabrication time. So now, I guess I chalk this up to "practice." Interesting about the flashing being too hard to work--I had not thought about that. I'd been using flash...

Re: Why is my lid jig a miserable failure?
Thanks--I should have specified the speed at which I was working. Going around in a circle, I'd take maybe 20 very small presses (the slightest bend appears), then the next rotation, 20 more (a little more bend), each time pressing only the amount that the metal seemed willing to give. I think I gav...

Why is my lid jig a miserable failure?
I want to make a lightweight lid of aluminum flashing (.010 thickness) for an aluminum mug (an Imusa mug which is 3.9" ID). I'd like to take the mug and lid backpacking, and be able to boil a bit of water in the mug for rehydrating meals. The lid is the sort that sits down into the mug about a ...

Re: Choice Between These Two Mills
If size and weight is no issue, I'd go with the bigger machine. I own the X3 because size and weight IS an issue for me--small crowded garage, I move frequently, I don't own a forklift, cherry picker, my rafters won't support a half ton. Do you have any ability to check the machines for square and p...

Re: Ordered Grizzly G0619 (SX3)
Perhaps my long-winded X3 partial teardown would be helpful in parts. http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=83378 A fair amount of my dissertation is devoted to how to move the little beastie without bringing the roof down on yourself. PS: The non-fitting collets was a known i...

Opinions of Sieg's new SX4?
What's your opinion of Sieg's SX4 which is becoming available here in the States? Why would anybody buy it instead of a Rong Fu 45, which weighs +200 lbs, is made in Taiwan instead of China, and sells for less? http://www.siegind.com/product.php?id=78 http://www.grizzly.com/products/Heavy-Duty-Bench...

Re: A Small Mill: My Sieg X3 Saga
Found this cool video of an old-world master scraping a Chinese cross slide. Love how subtle he is with his opinion of Chinese workmanship. Very interesting that he actually corrects geometry with scraping, which is above and beyond just getting mating surfaces flat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D...

Re: Help me make decision re: Grandfather's Lathe
Thanks guys. I'm going to clean it up a bit and investigate it for wear, etc. Who knows, this may be a keeper. I had planned to buy a newer more modern lathe, but thanks to Obamacare, my health insurance premium just went up $60 this month...$720/yr increase ...so the amount available for a lathe ju...
