Re: Karstens od grinder help needed..
I know nothing about grinders but whenever I see measurements around a lathe-like thing and they are 1/2 of what I'd expect I end up believing that they are diameter measurements rather than radius measurements.

Re: Tourbillon reel is done!
I have to agree with Harold - the workmanship demonstrated is beyond exceptional. However I have one question, What does the word 'tourbillion' mean?

Interesting shows and sales
I use to like going to the Cabin Fever show in Pa about mid Jan. However, I moved to Vermont and it is too long a drive to be reasonable for a mere shopper. I realize that many of the vendors drive longer distances to participate but they have a profit motive and I just have a spending motive. I've ...

Re: Anyone else paying attention to ChatGPT ?
Could a computer program distinguish between text written by a human and text written by ChatGPT? Maybe . The link tucked under the 'maybe' is really insightful. Thanks for finding it and bringing it to my attention. I was a system engineer for 52 years at IBM, Loral & LM doing the same job, Th...

Re: Help Identify Tool Chests
Tom-- Here is a link to the the thread and picture of the machinist chest I restored using a LOT of help from this forum's members. The picture shows a good view of the (missing) front cover I had to build for it. ... I hope you did not feel I was disparaging you, if so I apologize. I was thinking ...

Re: Anyone else paying attention to ChatGPT ?
About 2 days ago I read an article that explored how good ChatGPT was when used like a somewhat lazy 4th or 8th grader might employ it. The article reported on a test where typical questions were provided to children who had to write a short paragraph in response. They had selected 3 children and Ch...

Re: Help Identify Tool Chests
I'm not exactly sure what differentiates machinist and watchmaker chests but I do note that the top chest has a slot under the bottom drawer where the front cover would normally slide in to store. It appears that slot is empty which implies the front cover is missing. I would think that a machinist ...

Re: Welding after getting a pacemaker
I much appreciate the cautions that have been carefully expressed. They match my thinking (I'm a retired radar data processing engineer). But I also asked my doctor about the limitations. The answer was somewhat different. He and his NP stated they had called Boston Scientific (the manufacturer) and...

Re: Most Dangerous Machine
I watched the video from the beginning before I got to the part that readers considered dangerous. I thought the rotating splitter was a bit much but I probably do worse when it comes to splitting kindling. I use a hatchet and a 10" set of channel grips and I can't see much difference in the ri...

Welding after getting a pacemaker
Has anyone done any welding after getting a pacemaker. I did not ask the Dr about that before I had the surgery then I read the take home instructions and found on the 'do not do' list welding and skiing. I got the pacemaker so I could get back into skiing. Yesterday when I asked at the initial foll...

Re: Two solvent questions....
My son was an avid bicycle rebuilder and also the local manager of a discount auto parts store. I had bought a bottle of Simple Green after it first appeared at a local store and he found it to be very good for cleaning bicycle grit off and it was something his store stocked. Shortly he came to me t...

Re: device for turning polygon ends (hex, square, etc.)
A few years ago there was a discussion of another device for turning polygon shapes on shafts. I don't remember its name but it involved putting the cutting bit off axis while things rotated about the lathe axis. Does anyone remember the name and how would it compare with this approach? I believe th...
