Re: Inexpensive 3-jaw chuck/plate for rotab: good or bad?

A 4-jaw would also be worth considering. Most of the ready-to-mount packages I've seen on eBay, Shars, etc. come with 3-jaw chucks, though. Seems to me that if it's *consistent* runout, I could sort that out when mounting the chuck/plate assembly onto the rotab by indicating off a dowel pin in the c...

Inexpensive 3-jaw chuck/plate for rotab: good or bad?

It seems like 90% of the things I want to do with my 6-inch rotary table, at least in recent memory, can't be done without a chuck & adapter plate. This means that 90% of time the rotab goes unused in favor of some less-preferable alternative setup, or the project doesn't get done. I'm a huge be...

Re: Recommendations for cross-slide vise?

Inexpensive cross-slide vises are best described as "rough casting kits with example fittings installed for reference". I've spent at least 4 hours (so far) cleaning, machining, and scraping/refitting my "inexpensive" cross-slide vise. I should also mention the non-zero cost of r...

Re: Drill Press Vise Mods

That's pretty sweet. I've already made custom jaws for my drill press vise (huge improvement) and they'll be going on the mill to receive this modification today. I'll probably do threaded holes instead, as I can then use shoulder bolts of various lengths in place of the pins. I also quite like the ...

Re: Suggestions for indicators to buy?

(verifying readings with a Sheffield shadowgraph) Tabling the issue taken up by the Chaski Debating Society And Sewing Club for a moment, I'd like to note that I learned something new today. I'd never heard of a Sheffield Shadowgraph, and spent an interesting 10 minutes going through the Google sea...

Re: Rail chamfering Jig

Well, sort of... http://www.penntoolco.com/catalog/products/products.cfm?categoryID=7179 But the cutters are different and the depth of cut is probably less than .100" I'm not saying that Ron's idea is a good one though, as there are many considerations to making it work. Yeah, a deburring/cha...

Re: Rail chamfering Jig

The problem is: The strips are 8 ft long and they need to be perfectly straight. I could mill the edge 6" at a time and keep moving it along until the entire 8 ft has been passed through, but I won't get a perfectly straight rail. I could go with aluminum instead of steel. Would it work then? ...

Re: Rail chamfering Jig

That looks like a spectacularly bad idea. The design principle appears to be based on woodworking practice of moving the workpiece past the cutting tool. In metal machining the workpiece is held in a precise and (sufficiently) rigid fashion, then workpiece in its rigid setup is moved into the cuttin...

Re: G0484 all tuned up - now I have gear backlash issues

I hope the topic drifts back to the subject. Your efforts with the G0484 have been very educational for me. Heh. Thanks, Bill. Pity I don't make it out to Kansas City these days. If I end up making another pilgrimage to Sprint HQ we'll have to try for a meetup. Tough crowd -- thought sure I'd get a...

Re: Removing Albrecht Chuck From Arbor

I recently used the expert-approved alternate method of drilling a small hole in the inner back face of the chuck so I could use a punch to drive out the arbor. It did take a loooong time to get that hole drilled, but once I got through the punch drove the chuck right off. (The arbor shoulders were ...

I see that the propensity for major topic drift within threads has gotten no better in the year I was away. :)
