Re: Undercutting A Drilled Hole

Do a Google image search for a internal snapring grooving tool and lots of images will pop up. One style looks like a keyway cutter. Another style has some of the shank cut away to give you relief so you can offset the cutter once you have it in the bore. There are various YouTube videos on the subj...

Re: How Do I Get These 10 mm Nuts Undone On A Mobile Base?

Hit the bolts with an impact wrench. Wedge a screwdriver, chisel, etc against the nut if you have to.

Didn't the weight of the machine spring the mobile base into alignment?

Re: what are your favorite tools for salvaging scrap......

I have all of the above mentioned tools and also a plasma cutter but sometime it is just easier to go to the local hardware place and buy a pipe nipple of the appropriate size.

Re: High pressure air compressor

Fire departments fill their own air bottles. They have both station based and pumps on the trucks for the job. I wonder if you could buy them used somewhere? I'm sure they are VERY expensive new.

My biggest concern with a home brew setup would be fittings/tubing that could take the pressure.

Re: Plasma cutters 101

I've owned a ESAB 550 in the past. It was a nice machine. It's limit was ½" and that was slow. My main use was fabricating rock crawlers with my son. Only complaint I had, and it really wasn't a big complaint, was it went through consumables pretty good when cutting ¼" and above. Gave it t...

Re: Thread Steel Pipe To Make Woodworking Pipe Clamps

I've done this a bunch of times over the years. It's no big deal if it's for clamps. Not like it will have to handle 150 psi. Clamp pipe in your 'average sized' bench vise. Get a 'decent sized' pipe wrench to help it stop from turning. Slap appropriate sized die in die holder and put on pipe Lube wi...

Re: Put Hot Chuck on Cold Arbor & it Still Fell Off

Stupid question? Did the taper on the chuck match the arbor taper? I've hammered matching tapers together with a rubber mallet with both parts at room temperature and they don't fall apart. Even with side loading. Leave the shaft in the freezer overnight and heat up the chuck in the wife's stove a f...

Re: Any thoughts on this welder

Go read the owners manual listed. Be sure you pick the correct chart. I'd doubt it could even weld ⅛" steel. The duty cycles are ridiculously low for ridiculously low welding amps. Pay attention to the duty cycle. A duty cycle of 8% means it will be welding less than 1 minute out of every 10 mi...

Re: New challenge

Do you have a faceplate for your lathe? You could use toe clamps (cam lock clamps?) and hold it by its outside edge. That would allow you to turn about half the thickness. Then flop the disk around and readjust the clamps to hold it by the previously turned diameter. Then finish turning the diameter...

Re: Male or Female End on Compressor Hose?

Keep in mind that if you are talking flare fittings then trying to seal the threads doesn't help. It's the flare itself that is doing the sealing. The flare nut is just a clamping device.

Re: Mig welding aluminium

Helium (or a helium/argon mix) gives a hotter weld. Here is one write up by ESAB. http://www.esabna.com/us/en/education/blog/what-shielding-gas-should-i-use-when-welding-aluminum.cfm Are you welding down inside of the box or on the outside? I would think down inside the box you would really have to ...

Re: How to transport a lathe

If the ¾ ton pickup's bed is long enough why not just have the forklift lift it into the bed and then just strap it down real well? Prior to loading bolt it down to a couple of 4x4 pieces of lumber to increase its footprint. You could also load it with a boom style wrecker. Lift it up, drive under i...
