Re: Recommendation for smokebox fasteners?

Thanks, I ordered brass bolts and nuts from Godshall (support your live steam suppliers!) along with some other bits. I am going to follow the other recommendation to recheck all the nuts/bolts every fall after the last run for the year. The smokebox is a hellish mix of heat, steam and flue gases. I...

Re: Recommendation for smokebox fasteners?

There are 3 bolts for each of the 2 smokebox braces and 4 for the headlight stand. (So 10 total.) The smokestack uses four 10-24 bolts and the petticoat is held to the bottom of the stack with three 10-24 cone point set screws. Based on the mangled metal, I suspect that the previous owner had issues...

Recommendation for smokebox fasteners?

I am rehabbing a 2 1/2" scale Mich-Cal Shay. The previous owner decided to make some changes to the engine when he bought it, but passed away before finishing. In the process of removing the headlight stand and smokebox braces, he broke off five 6-32 fasteners that held things in place on the smokeb...

Re: Tender Build Advice

makinsmoke: I have been trying to solder seal a tender that I built from an Allen Models kit. I have been challenged with getting enough heat without it being too much. So, what solder/flux do you use and what are you using for heat?

Re: Little Engines Wendy?

The other odd thing about that engine is it does not have a traditional firebox.

Re: Basket case 2-4-0

There is a member of the Rocky Mountain Rails that rescued a Little Engines 4-4-0 that had been window decoration for a barbershop (I think). He has spent quite a bit of time getting it running, but seems to have enjoyed the rebuilding process. I hope you find the same satisfaction.

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

I am about to start the "solder sealing" step on the water legs of the tender I am building and wanted to know, do you use a big soldering iron or a torch for heat?

Re: Penberthy Injector question

I had a Penberthy BB-21 on a traction engine it was mounted about 18 inches higher than the spot that it entered the boiler. I loved that injector ... it worked every time without fail.

Re: Ed Perry

As a data point, Rich Ulin just got a new boiler from Ed a few weeks ago. It took longer than originally promised, but it was a bit complicated because it has a copper firebox, copper tubes, but the rest is steel. (Don't ask me why Rich wanted the copper firebox ... I don't really know why.)

Re: New Tender Tank Kits

Steve, First off, thanks for all that you are doing to make building a locomotive more achievable for those of us with less skill (and less time). I ordered one of the 30" kits for the Fitchburg Northern project engine that I purchased recently. I had also ordered the casting set for the tender fram...

Re: New laser cut tender tank kits from Allen Models!

I placed my order for the smaller tank (for a Fitchburg Northern) this morning as soon as I saw this.

Any recommendations for the rivet tools?
