Re: Basket case 2-4-0

There is a member of the Rocky Mountain Rails that rescued a Little Engines 4-4-0 that had been window decoration for a barbershop (I think). He has spent quite a bit of time getting it running, but seems to have enjoyed the rebuilding process. I hope you find the same satisfaction.

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

I am about to start the "solder sealing" step on the water legs of the tender I am building and wanted to know, do you use a big soldering iron or a torch for heat?

Re: Penberthy Injector question

I had a Penberthy BB-21 on a traction engine it was mounted about 18 inches higher than the spot that it entered the boiler. I loved that injector ... it worked every time without fail.

Re: Ed Perry

As a data point, Rich Ulin just got a new boiler from Ed a few weeks ago. It took longer than originally promised, but it was a bit complicated because it has a copper firebox, copper tubes, but the rest is steel. (Don't ask me why Rich wanted the copper firebox ... I don't really know why.)

Re: New Tender Tank Kits

Steve, First off, thanks for all that you are doing to make building a locomotive more achievable for those of us with less skill (and less time). I ordered one of the 30" kits for the Fitchburg Northern project engine that I purchased recently. I had also ordered the casting set for the tender fram...

Re: New laser cut tender tank kits from Allen Models!

I placed my order for the smaller tank (for a Fitchburg Northern) this morning as soon as I saw this.

Any recommendations for the rivet tools?

Re: Stainless steel boiler/exchanger?

There is a 4" scale porter on DLS that has been up for sale for a while. The owner proudly describes the boiler: "New Boiler in 2010- 10-1/4" x 33" EXTRUDED STAINLESS STEEL with mild steel sheets front & back with 17 schedule K copper flues. " When I saw that, I immediately factored a new, non-stain...

Re: Locomotive Roller Test Stand

The main reason for asking is the problem of valve timing. This is a Maxitrak locomotive that i have running smoothly in reverse but is terrible forward. Using a roller stand should help get the timing right. Valve gear is Marshall Bill I am working on a Maxitrak Lil'Jo "Mogul" and the timing is a ...

Re: E-Mail today, Offer casting fully Machine

As a founder of a MakerSpace (www.lovelandcreatorspace.com), I can whole heartedly endorse the idea of using a makerspace to gain access to equipment needed to construct a locomotive. However, that comes with some constraints. For example, you can't do a setup on a mill and leave it for a week until...

Low/No water ...

Let me first say, that all of my steam experience is with running G-Scale live steam and an 1891 Groton Traction engine I used to own. Yesterday, we had a situation at our track where a new member with a 1" scale steam engine had a low/no water situation. The engine is one that he and his father pur...

Re: Controller conversions for a 1991 HAAS VF-1?

After reading your inputs, we went back to the folks that donated the mill to us and they are going to have their chief machinist come out to help us restore the mill to working order or at least as close as we can get. It does not appear the conversion to a different controller is in the cards for ...
