Re: Peizo/push button ignition lighters
I use one on my Mich-Cal Shay (T-Boiler) because there is a flame spreader plate that blocks access to the burner. (Uses a turkey burner, the spreader forces the flame toward the walls of the firebox tube.) The igniter button is mounted to the floor in the cab and the piezo igniter sticks up through...

Re: Alaska Live Steamers
My youngest son & wife moved to Anchorage last year. We have not been up to visit yet and our current plans are to visit over Christmas. I hope to get there some time during the summer months down the road. I did not see a track plan on the Alaska Central web site. Do you have one to share?

Re: Issues with RMI
I called a while ago about getting a locomotive stand. His first response was "I need to check and see if we still offer that.". The stand was and is still on the web site. He did not call back and I ended up building my own. I own an RMI 25t 0-4-0 switcher that I bought as a "kit&quo...

Re: Grid of bars above propane burner
Rich Ulin was fond of putting a grate above his propane burner and put lava rock or ceramic "briquettes" (look like BBQ charcoal). They acted like a flame spreader plus absorbed and reradiated heat.I think the real reason that he used them is that when. you opened the firebox door, it look...

Re: To pump or not to pump that is the question
Rich Ulin went all in on injectors for his last engine. Two EEs. I am planning on 2 EEs for my Fitchburg Northern, but it will also have an axle pump. One thing I have seen on full size traction engines that use 2 injectors is one is larger capacity than the other. I don't know if they were trying t...

Re: 2 1/2" Ulin Shay - WSLC #15
Rich Ulin was a long time member of the Colorado Live Steamers. It was a sad day when he passed, but I am glad to see that people are still building his engines.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Wanted: mich-cal shay plans in 2.5" scale
I have been restoring a Mich-Cal Shay that I bought a few years ago. Have been pondering the idea of building a 3rd truck. Apparently Lima did sell at least one small 2 cylinder Shay with 3 trucks. The extra water storage and riding space might be nice.
