Re: Questions about new DRO

Fwiw some years ago I saw one of the best and well thought out DRO installations on one of the machinist forums for a Bridgeport type mill but can't recall where it was. The poster did mount his X axis on the front of the table, managed to keep the table locks and power feed adjustable limit stops....

Re: Grease for vertical mill quil bearings?

I have a mill similar to the G3617 (HM 52 over here), it origonally had taper bottom and deep groove top and took grease from factory. I changed it to 2 x taper bearings and after phoning around to a lot of bearing companies they all came up with the same answer to use car wheel bearing grease. If t...

Re: Looking for somebody to sharpen some T-slot cutters

It took some hunting but I found the posts I put up for sharpening these sort of cutters at home in the lathe cheaply.

Re: Wanting to make a D1-4 to threaded adaptor

Sorry, what I meant by a crook chuck was a bad chuck with run out, not made true etc.
Over here if your feeling sick you would be feeling crook, maybe it's just Aussie slang.

Re: Wanting to make a D1-4 to threaded adaptor

I have cleaned up a few direct mount chucks and face plates, what I did was to mount the crook chuck in the spindle mounted chuck, then it's easy to turn it around and try.
Mark it as Harold said so it mounts back in the same spot when you remount it to take off a bit more.

Re: Any updated advice on DROs?

Hi Glenn,
Just wondering, is your scale/reader head mounted vertical or is it laying on it's side?

I have seen them mounted both ways on factory fitted machines, and think the lay down type of install would be more prone to coolant getting in.

Re: Any updated advice on DROs?

Agree about the Wixey. As long as the scales are mounted correctly (X,Y seals facing down) there is not much chance of scratching the glass and not something you hear of. A lot of glass scales these days have double seals, and in my 6-7 years of owning and running single seal glass scales I have nev...

Re: Knee Mill Chip Pan

Hi Ted, Lot's of people say the same thing about that site, he is not actually stealing the posts because he posts the original links and only has one photo. I would take it as a compliment. When I came to the part around the knee screw I came up with a splash proof idea which looking at yours is pr...

Re: power feed problems mill drill

Hi Keith, Good to hear you have it worked out. Just to show how it works and for future members I dug through my photos from a few years back that I took for a member elsewhere. The top (or bottom if attached to the mill) slides right off after undoing the 4 screws at the bottom. No nasty surprises ...
