The least amount of junk that comes out of the cylinder can get stuck in the cylinder cocks and prevent them from sealing properly. Did you make your own Cylinder Cocks? LocoParts does make a temporary install burner that will fit through the fire door. The burner goes in the firebox through the fire door and sits on existing grate supports.

John, Arches can cause problems in smaller fireboxes with the burner and this also depends on the type of burner you plan on using. Having built one of these years ago, The only castings where wheels, Cylinders (Stuart #2), smoke box front and Sand Dome top and bottom. I would recommend using John's castings. Unless you specifically want to build that particular engine I would recommend that you look into John's 20 Ton Shay. Joh...
