thanks, y'all.... there's some 120 deg. point carbide coated drill mills on ebay cheap, so i'm gonna give em' a try... the cobalt bits i had were 118 deg., i think, they weren't 135.... just some hard, dense stuff these poppers are, so.... i betcha the carbide works...

i shoot USPSA competition at my local club. we have alot of 'pepper popper' style steel that we use as activators for other targets. the stuff is pretty hard, ate 3 HSS cobalt drills to drill 4 holes, so.... i think it's that AT 500 stuff.... i drill the holes, then use eye bolts thru to attach cabl...

just measured some more..... 5/16 shafts in both head and tailstock. centered pretty good .0015 in 4 jaw and chucked in jacobs in tail. chuck isn't that straight, changes .003 if you rotate it, but..... still the tailstock is @.015 high. measured w/an intrerapid locked in my QC toolpost. confirms sa...

thanks for all the help, y'all.......i gotta do some more measuring, all these ideas are great. i thought it was way out, and took the tailstock apart, at least off the base, and now i gotta turn another shaft to get it centered, then measure again. everything was/is clean, no chips interfering, so ...

OT, but.....yeah, my step-father got me a job in a brass foundry in aurora, had to be there at 6 a.m..... 20 below, glare ice on the road...yeehaw.....I-5 (i think it is) was a valley of snow, had to be 20' high, you couldn't see out.... i thought i was on mars or someplace....you ain't the only one...

thanks for the comeback......yeah, you right!...... 3/16 shanks, turning perfect in the 4 jaw, chucked in jacobs in tailstock quill - quill is @ .016 higher.....not too bad, not as bad as i thought. the shank i had my interapid on ain't pretty, so maybe that didn't help, although it was turning true...

need some advice? i have a 9x20 sheldon lathe, posted a some pics here awhile ago, it's old school, but a pretty nice piece..... always suspected the tailstock was off, using a center drill has been kinda hard. i have a nice south bend 4 jaw that i can turn accurately in, and the ways seem straight,...

i'd love to have it.....you can use it in building 1911 style pistolas, measuring the slide/frame grooves, how much you gotta remove to get them fit. at least i think you can......
