Re: ww2

Sort-of on topic. In 1971, in Oakland, CA, I bought a Delta 14" drill press with a tapping head and some extra tooling. The old guy selling it said, "This machine bought our house. I worked in the Alameda Naval Yard and got a subcontracting job making brackets. They gave me this drill press. We put ...

Self-ejecting chuck keys Y/N

There are two classes of machinists - those who've forgotten to remove the chuck key and had it thrown at them and those who've been hit by one. Having said that, I don't remember ever owning one of those spring-loaded-self-ejecting chuck keys. Some have an external spring. https://i.ebayimg.com/ima...

Re: Need Grizzly/Jet/Frejoth cross feed gear suggestions?

Late update, but it was the correct part and a half-day's work to install and re-tune everything.

Re: Making craftsman lathe parts

Nice work! The ball crank you made doubled the value of the lathe parts. I was just looking at mine today and it's a crude cast piece maybe 1/10th as strong as yours

Re: The Packard V 8

This thread has wandered so far off the topic, it's pretty much unsalvagable, but if anyone really wants to know about Studebaker and Packard V8s, PM me and we can discuss specifics.

Re: Need Grizzly/Jet/Frejoth cross feed gear suggestions?

And yes, it's the gear on the back side of the apron which is driven by the worm gear on the feed shaft. FWIW, I just ordered one from Grizzly; P9249335 - $88 with shipping and sales tax. Hope it's the correct gear. Also, there was a "V2" note, so again, hope they beefed up the guaranteed-to-fail or...

Need Grizzly/Jet/Frejoth cross feed gear suggestions?

Jet 1024P Grizzly G9249 12 x 37 Lantiane Frejoth LAM350 The brass cross feed gear on these lathes seems to be a total piece of underengineered garbage and my searches find numerous threads of failed parts, but no new and improved gear which won't fail with normal careful operation. Anyone have any s...

Re: Convert air cooled to liquid cooled?

FWIW, why remove the fins? The engineers went some effort to put them where the cooling fluid flow would be most efficient. Water is just a more viscous cooling fluid. Watch how the air is pumped over the fins and arrange the water flow to duplicate it. The most difficult to arrange is sealing aroun...

Re: The Engine World, and their Records. GREAT READ..

FWIW, a friend's son just earned a PhD with his thesis on conversion of large marine powerplants to LNG. He says it's the next big thing, because a big upside is the cleaner fuel means longer engine and fuel system life. Bunker fuel is nasty stuff.

Re: Camshaft Steel

Any thoughts about using cast iron, as most OEM flat tappet cams? IIRC, billets of Durabar/Versabar are readily available. Just Parkerize and they're ready to go.
