Re: Progress on the 3/4" scale 0-8-0 switcher
Yes, BA is still the 'standard' thread on locos and other steam models over here even though it's rarely used in industry. Some electrical stuff may still use them. Nearly all the drawings we work to specify BA and ME threads so, yes, that is what we use. Taps, dies and fixings are readily available...

Re: Is buying a part finished project worthwhile?
Is it one built from a Winson kit? It certainly sounds like one. A lot of the machining on the kits was pretty dire!

Re: Two English gents and locos
The top loco looks as though it could be a 'Southernised' 3½" Gauge Maisie. The second loco looks like a 5" Gauge Butch.
I would guess that the names on the riding cars are possibly those of past members or maybe members who sponsored their construction?

Re: Miniature Injectors by D A G Brown.
Thanks Steve but I think the fact it worked was more luck than skill!
I agree that the bodies are a pain to make, especially the overflow cover. I've thought about getting some lost wax castings made if I make anymore!

Re: Miniature Injectors by D A G Brown.
When I was building my Helen Long I had a go at making some small injectors for it. The smallest we can buy are 11 or 12oz and even those are a bit too big for most 2½" Gauge locos so I had a go at making some 8oz and even a 4oz (just to see if I could). I pretty much followed Derek Brown's 'Wo...

Re: Firetube Boiler Project - Leak Troubles
Hi Quinn, You are not alone in this 'chasing leaks' lark. I know several builders of boilers that have tried to seal leaks by silver soldering again and finished up with more leaks than when they started! When I was watching your video on fitting the boiler tubes and end plates I was thinking 'that'...

Re: I Don't Know Why I Ever Got Involved...
Good to see someone working on a 2.5" loco over there, especially Uranus! I shall follow this with interest.I always fancied building one but built a Helen Long instead. Also good to know that the 2.5" track at PLS is being used. The only Uranus that I have seen in the flesh and running is...

Re: Walscharts Valve Gear help
Just a thought. Are you sure that the combination levers are the correct dimensions? The dimensions of the levers should give an initial valve travel of 2 x (Lap + Lead) What happens when you put the reverser in mid gear and push the loco? The ports should just crack open by the amount of lead that ...

Re: Slide valve
Ok, still trying to be helpful hopefully :D Tom has given the dimensions for the ports, the slide valve and the valve travel and we've filled in the missing dimensions? We've deduced that the lap is 0.125" and the 0.5" valve travel should match the travel required in full gear. The size of...

Re: Stephenson valve system
If the dimensions you give on your drawing are correct (and I'm interpreting them correctly) then the lap of the valves is 1/8". The valve travel to fully open the ports will be: 2 x (lap + port width) = 2 x (1/8 + 1/8) = 1/2" so your 1/2" travel of the valve rod is fine and both port...

I would be interested in knowing what design that is if anyone recognises it.

Re: Tubes...leaking
I've successfully cured small weeps from tubes and stays with Loctite 290 which is a thin wicking grade of threadlocker. Just put some on the leaking area after drying and cleaning and let it soak in. It helps if you can pull a vacuum inside the boiler to help draw the Loctite into the crack. We had...
