Re: Need Air brake line Gauge with two needles
For those interested- more recently the Live Steam May/June 2019 has Kozo's DIY pressure gauge for the K-27 project. Or it would be included in volume 2 of the K-27 books to be coming out next year. It is a 1-1/4" diameter bourdon tube type and he details making a dead weight tester for calibra...

Re: There are railroads and then there is this....
What a gorgeous ride! I thought this was interesting looking for what the original steam locos looked like for the many years prior to electrification. They used a transverse mounted boiler to cope with the grade- different from the Mount Washington. There are a couple photos that give a hint of the...

Re: Wide Wheel Treads
From Wikipedia - Ecuadoran Railways northern line from Quito to San Lorenzo on the coast ran through Alto Tambo. 3'-6" gauge which looks possible from the video. Quite a creative way to use the abandoned right of way!

Re: X3 Mill tramming thoughts
Hi Jimmy, I have the same mill, and just reading this thread today- was going to suggest lapping the gib, so I'm glad you found that! I had the same issue with movement of the head when I got it new, and improving the fit of the parts resolved enough of the issues that the machine continues to do a ...

Re: Kozo A3 3/4 scale up and running sort of
Hi Jack,
The St. Croix track is 800 and some feet around. I can go a full lap on one firing if the load is light or holding the camera
Better is to give it three shovels at the halfway past the curved bridge before the long 1% upgrade, and again back at the station before the downgrade.

Re: Firetube Boiler Project - Leak Troubles
Hi Quinn, Sorry to hear of your struggles- I've also been following your boiler build videos- nice work! I completed my Kozo designed boiler for the K-27 locomotive last spring, and I built the A3 locomotive boiler a number of years ago. One trick he discusses that I DIDN'T do on the small boiler, b...

Yes! We would love to have the 2.5" get used. There was a loco in the club- maybe a northern - but it is down with boiler woes and hasn't been seen for 10 years. We have 5" too for the European adjacent!

Re: Kozo A3 3/4 scale up and running sort of
Thanks folks! I think the A3 is about a perfectly proportioned locomotive for its era, and I like the tank engine A3a even better. Al, I did the design changes myself - 'kit bashed Kozo' as a friend says- working from photos and drawings in a locomotive cyclopedia. Credit to Dave Sclavi for recommen...

Re: Kozo A3 3/4 scale up and running sort of
Looking at my A3 I'm seeing I did something different from the drawings. Per others recommendation I piped the hand pump to feed through the axle pump to enable pushing air through when starting up. Because the lower feed line is now under pressure, I made the hex portion with the ball seat larger t...

Re: Kozo A3 3/4 scale up and running sort of
Congrats on your A3! I have occasionally had water level bubbles in my A3, but in normal running the standard design works fine. I concur with others advice about it being a new boiler with small amounts of contaminants- steaming it a few times will help too. I blow down about a quarter of the glass...

Re: Future project: Pennsylvania A3 Switcher
I've been quite happy with my A3, though I did redesign it to be one of the saddle tank versions the PRR built. That adds a few pounds of tank and water for traction. It will pull two adults around the St.Croix track with a 1% ruling grade. To Bill's point on the throttle, I modified mine with the a...
