They have done the same thing on the 4014. Welded up out of sheet steel, painted black like everything else and you can't see them unless you look real close.

Looks to me like the black wire on the burnt terminal may have been lose. Lose =extra resistance =high heat=burn.

Easier to put the neoprene pads on now than when the lathe is mounted.

I always thought they were vertical too but the picture in Fitt's book shows them line horizontally. One in the middle. straight up and one on either side at a slight angle due to the curve of the boiler.

As far as painting an engine, I never have. I've painted a house several times but that doesn't qualify as an engine either. So consider the source of this suggestion.
