Re: Atlas shaper
Thanks for the replies. I will look at how South Bend did theirs, that may be a plan.If I did do a stepper motor I think that would have it clamp onto the end of the shaft where it would be locked in place but easily removable to hand crank it. The hard part for me, but doable would be programming t...

Re: Atlas shaper
Well the ratchet seems simple in practice but without drawings it would be hard to make, and the used parts that are available are made of gold. I’m also missing all of the belt guards and plan to fab some because the replacement ones cost more than I paid for the machine. Used stepper motors are pl...

Atlas shaper
I bought a little 7 inch Atlas shaper, however it’s missing lots of parts. 1st there is only a single pulley on the counter shaft and I don’t know if it’s even original. So would any of you tell me what the diameters of the motor, counter shaft and step pulleys are? The other bad thing is all of the...

Hydraulic oils
I was wondering about the hydraulic oil that can be safely used in a jack or manual hydraulic pump. I have a hand pump that was used to tilt the cab on a cab over semi and it uses power steering fluid. Hydraulic jacks use jack oil, and power machinery uses a couple of grades of hydraulic oil. So wha...

Re: Left handed lathe, for lack of a better name
I saw a left handed lathe on a WW2 sub. It was built that way to fit into the space that they had for it. On display in Manitowoc Wi.

Re: Timing belts
Well I figgered it out. I found some information on similar drives using belts and that gave me the HP/ kilo watt rating that I needed. found some tables that I could plug the speed and Kilo watts into. I didn't need exact figures just will it work? or no way.

Re: Timing belts
I found those calculations, but they seem complicated, and I understand that horsepower is rpm x torque. Now I know the rpm and I know the inflated horsepower of the motor so I suppose that I could calculate its supposed torque. But still why isn’t there a simple calculator to just plug in the numbe...

Timing belts
I’m trying to find a chart or simple calculator that gives the power that toothed timing belts can transmit. Everything that I’ve found are complex calculations that require every dimension of the proposed system. I only need one horsepower, probably less. I simply want to make a speed reduction for...

Re: Tapered taps
The first photo is the taps, the 2nd is on a box of similar taps and dies, so maybe bicycle building, but why the long taps?

Re: Tapered taps
The fine thread and the taper is the weird thing, you would almost need to start with a tapered hole. And why so long, they are marked with the size and for a short hole they would not need to be that long.

Tapered taps
I don’t have a picture of them but I saw some taps that look like blacksmith taps but have a very fine thread. They are about three inches long and tapered their whole length. The thread size is 7/16 - 80 on one and 9/16 - 20 on another. The size marked appears to be the big end because the point is...
