Re: Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping ****GONE****

To revive a dead horse for anyone that may be interested, the shipping cost of these castings from the west coast to the east coast, via FedEx freight, was just a hair over $400 dollars. The crate and contents tipped the scale at 300 lbs. If the engine does indeed get finished, it will be a very exc...

Re: Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping

THE CASTINGS ARE GONE! Thanks for the comments, picture and interest. Maybe we'll get to see the engine in its finished state. :D

Re: Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping

WOW..that's what I said. Couldn't believe there was a double cylinder steam/beam engine spinning a single flywheel, but the truth is in the pictures. I almost feel like abandoning my other chores and sallying forth with the build, but at 75 years old you have a little different perspective on life. ...

Re: Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping

Wow...that's it gents! Thanks for the picture, the base shouldn't be too hard to duplicate out of a piece of plate, and the picture shows clues to all the other parts.

Re: Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping

Here is a link to a Google photo album of the castings. I've not done this before so I hope it works.

Re: Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping

An an addendum to my original post, these castings weight 197 lbs, sans any packaging. Two folks have inquired about them, but because of the shipping costs to the east coast have passed. They're still available, free, and they would make a couple of awesome models.

Stationary Steam Engine Castings Free/Shipping ****GONE****

I have some very large grey iron castings for probably 2 steam engines that were given to me. I will never get to them and want them to go to a good home. These are FREE for the cost of shipping. I'm in Northern California, Eureka 95503 to be exact and the combined weight of all the castings is goin...

John,

Great job and I'll bet it was fun too! Ain't it grand having all the resources to turn a idea into a functional hunk of steel! :D

Re: Accessory Project for a Standard Indicator

Good looking job! Do you have a specific task in mind for that setup...the only way to hold the dial indicator would be by the back lug which seems to me to severely limit how one could use this device.

Re: Best Way to Fix Rusty Half Center?

I don't know how to fix it but I would run it as is. I have a dead half center like yours and have used it maybe once in 30 years. They work well when threading close to the end of a small diameter shaft where tool or tool holder interference would be an issue but a live center with a long snout wor...

Re: spring is finally here,

The equivalent to a roughing cut on a surface grinder might be .001 of an inch so my guess is one would never notice any perceived HP loss. Hogging aluminum on a mill and grinding material on a surface grinder are like comparing apples to kumquats IMHO. :?

Re: spring is finally here,

Conrad, My two cents...frequency drives are nice, I have three of them powering various peices of machinery. The options they allow you are almost endless but to be honest, other than the simple generation of 3 phase for your grinder I would look elsewhere. I used a static converter for many years t...
