Re: Breathing new life into an old Kurt

I like to put a couple button head cap screws into the side of the jaw I am not using just as a thread protector I chose 'Safety Blue' by Rustoleum ... not perfect, but a pretty close match. The hardest part was finding those little drive screws in my ares to re-attach the SN plate. I made the 'soft...

Breathing new life into an old Kurt

So I picked up this Kurt D60-1 ... it was in okay shape. The bed was good and that is whatI was most concerned with. As found https://i.imgur.com/N1Jsc7S.jpg The top had a big circle (like from a fly cutter) in it with a smaller concentric circle and two squares ... making it look like it was vise 0...

Harold_V wrote: Fri Mar 15, 2019 1:58 am Very nice, but storing your collets where they're subjected to chips isn't a great idea. I keep mine in a cabinet behind my mill, where they stay clean.

It's so pretty I have no intention of ever using the mill again ..... so no danger of chips

HAHAHA

NOT! :D

Home made collet rack

I looked at several different options for a collet rack for my mill rebuilt/refinish and in the end, I decided to make my own So I took some 3/4" tubing and welded it to a piece of 1/4" flat stock. I welded another piece of tubing at a 45 degree angle and welded into it a threaded rod coup...

Re: Review of WNY Phase Converter Panel

So the wiring was pretty straightforward. You bring your red and black from the 220 breaker you bring them to L1 and L2. Then you bring the three legs from the idler (pony) motor to both A,B, and C and to the plugs or motor you are going to power. Operation - start-up is fast and quiet - I really li...

Re: Review of WNY Phase Converter Panel

My old set-up used to sit between the Mill and Lathe ... and I found this to be the 'impact area' for a lot of chips from the mill - so I tucked it under a shelf in between the surface grinder and the lathe .... should stay cleaner there https://i.imgur.com/CPOSJWC.jpg I like to use the EMT rather t...

Re: Review of WNY Phase Converter Panel

The instructions were only 'OK' - I thought they were written for someone who already knows something about electricity .... but then again, I guess that is OK, because if you don't know anything about electricity you probably have no business trying to install one yourself. My voltages are pretty b...

Re: Review of WNY Phase Converter Panel

Here you see it wired up. I settled on a complete 'phase converter panel' made by a place called WNY Supply out of NY. I got mine from eBay, as they have pretty good buyer-protection. It came in a large USPS box with packing peanuts. When I got it out and the cover off, It was ok. Not the most expen...

Review of WNY Phase Converter Panel

I had a choice to make. I like the idea of VFD's but I already owned a 3hp 3-PH motor that I used as the most basic rotary phase converter. I stared it with a 1750 rpm 1/4 hp single phase motor, mounted shaft-to-shaft with the big idler motor. It didn't have start or run capacitors and it was a pain...

Re: Round Ram Upgrade

Despite the good advice on VFD's I went with a 'Rotary Phase Converter' panel for the motor I already had ...I wired it all up last night and some tonight. I also moved the motor - it was in the 'impact area' for a lot of chips ... so I moved it between my lathe and surface grinder ... should stay c...

Re: Round Ram Upgrade

To me - it matters what you do with the areas - parts that no one sees or doesn't see too often! :) https://i.imgur.com/4O1rFAj.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Krw8BNj.jpg https://i.imgur.com/pCGKMGn.jpg I made a couple shelf boards from red oak and put a few coats of polyurethane on them - near too nice to...
