Re: Ammco Shaper Question
Ammco 7" Shaper is really a re-labeled Delta Rockwell machine. I have one of the Delta machines. The gear is a high grade phenolic as in fabric reinforcing. Not the bakelite molding. Harold got it correct. Most any oil or grease will work. I have used 30W motor oil with power punch added. This ...

"Green Instrument" Engraving Machine Model 106
I have had this machine for a long time. I just unpacked it from when I moved 10 years ago. I cant locate my cutters I had for it. Anyone out there may have any loose cutters. Green went under in the early 90s, so as far as I know there is no supply for cutters. The cutters used in this machine are ...

Re: What size turning tools to use?
On that small of machine I would go with either 1/4 or 5/16 inch. Which ever one fits the center height of that lathe and tool holder. The Eclipse make the very first rate sets or singles. Expensive you bet. But unless you break one they last forever. Get the High Speed Steel with at least 2% Kobalt...

Re: Flat vs V Belt?
. First a GOOD flat belt, not the old stretchy leather ones, will provide a better running belt on lathes of the size of yours. As a matter of fact, at least 10 years ago a Swiss precision lathe was still being built using modern flat belts. I cant remember the name of that machine but it was made t...

Richard: This old mailbox lathe wouldnt be painted green with silver chuck would it? Just off I-5 towards Battle Ground Wa? Schurman Machine Old lathes are good for straightening shafts and metal spray. Although there is a guy up in Washington who has a big one painted up nice. He set his mail box o...

Re: making gun barrels in the lathe
homebrew .357 Got a Hard chrome question: I have a Myford Speed 10 lathe I have been thinking of hard chroming the bedways on this lathe. As you may know this is a dovetail bed. The machine is near new, (30 years in the crate) but I find the bed is really soft and if not cleaned all the time small h...

Left hand dial calipers a handy Item-
. While Iam not a lefty, I recently purchased a left hand set of dial calipers from Grizzly. ($21.95) I had always thought a left handed caliper would be handy for measuring on a lathe especially close to the chuck. I had never seen a left handed set available anywhere. Now I use the left set all th...

Re: That roller thing on a caliper
I have been closing it with a "pinch" on the jaws for years. It depends on the size of the part though. A .010 part compared to a 3.00" part. The other thing is what grade of dial caliper. If you have a first rate dead on set of Swiss Heilos or one of those no name $12.00 chi/com sets...
