Re: Modeltec Back Issues - Pennsy E6 Series Parts 32, 46, 48

Thanks Andy.

For all is attached an index in Excel I made of the Modeltec article series detailing the building of the E6s Atlantic. It ran in 83 parts starting October, 1987 thru March, 1996. Only the locomotive plans were published.

Cheers,
Joe

Modeltec Back Issues - Pennsy E6 Series Parts 32, 46, 48, 49

Anyone have the following Modeltec issues they'd be willing to sell or scan the E6 articles?

May, 1990: Pennsy E6 part 32
July, 1991: Pennsy E6 part 46
Sept, 1991: Pennsy E6 part 48
Oct, 1991: Pennsy E6 part 49

The ones from 1991 are darn near impossible to get....

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Drawings for Elesco Feedwater Heater

Here's some scans from the Locomotive Cyclopedia 1944 edition. Again I had to compress the pictures. If you want the higher resolution scans, I'll have to send them via personal email.

Re: Drawings for Elesco Feedwater Heater

See attached for scans from the 1929 "Elesco Locomotive Feed Water Heaters: Operation and Maintenance" booklet. No dimensions, but they should help out. I'll look in some other references to see what upgrades Elesco, ALCO, or NYC did to fit the time of a J3 Hudson (1937 and later). I had to compress...

Re: Elesco pump drawings

See attached photos for diagrams of the Elesco CF-1 pump. From the 1929 "Elesco Locomotive Feed Water Heaters: Operation and Maintenance" booklet.

Hope this is useful to someone.

Re: Advice on Brazing the Barrel Joint - 7" OD Copper

Thanks everyone for the advice. GWRdriver - Thanks for the idea of putting a few small external straps. One large butt strap to cover all the teeth would have to be about 1" wide. Then there are the issues of ensuring proper joint gap over the entire length (~17"), avoid trapped flux, etc. I'll keep...

Re: Advice on Brazing the Barrel Joint - 7" OD Copper

I reread the section on how to make the castellated joint of Alec Farmers "Model Locomotive Boilermaking" and confirmed an idea I had of planishing the teeth (squishing the metal to expand it) for the final fit, then braze it with silver solder. Will need to file the teeth clean, straight & square f...

Advice on Brazing the Barrel Joint - 7" OD Copper

All, I recently purchased copper material for a loco boiler (see first pic) and the tapered barrel has the castellated joint already cut. Problem is that the teeth are not that exact fitting (depth is mostly okay), with some gaps approaching 1/16". Obviously, this gap is too large for most b...

NYC J3a Hudson Plans (1" or 1.5" Scale)

Does anyone supply NYC J3a Hudson Plans in 1" (or 1.5" Scale)? Comtemplating building a 1" scale J3a Hudson, and working off an existing scale design would save a bunch of time. Has anyone bought the loco drawing CD's that the NYC Historical Society sells? What kind of quality are the scans? They're...

Step Brazing and Other Silver Soldering Questions

STEP BRAZING: Much literature mentions step brazing (using lower melting temperature filler metals on successive joints in order to not damage previous joints) when constructing boilers. Anyone have experience and advice on this? Others like Kozo (and I've been under the tutelage of Ed Hume, a Kozo...
