Re: Ox Yoke™ Safety Chains

I don't think I would approve these for use at GGLS. We require the cars to be chained together, not the couplers.

Re: .032 copper tubing

It's OK to use for the pressures we have. But if you want to thread it, the 0.049" is a whole lot better. That's about all it boils down to.

Re: Silver solder flux

I bead blast it off usually, but where I worked they chipped off as much as they could, then put the workpiece in boiling water until the flux was gone. The flux does eventually dissolve in water.

Re: Hydrostatic Lubricator Drawings

When that article came out, I was interested in making a version for m 3-cyl Schools Class engine. I didn't have drawings but I looked at the article and figured out the function of all the parts and rough dimension, then made my own lubricator which had 3-pots rather than the Detroit's 4 pots. It i...

Re: Steam Dome Throttle

I agree that Artzberger's throttle works well. However, we had to put a ball valve to shut off the delivery pipe during boiler tests. Apparently the teflon block leaks badly when the boiler is completely filled with water as it would be during a boiler hydrotest.

Re: Restored Australian garrett in action

I am slowly building a double Prairie Garratt using Allen Models Consolidation wheels. The wheels set the scale at about 2.25, and the gauge is 7 1/2". I am using the Consolidation front truck plans for the front, rear, and inside trucks. The motor frames were water jet cut following the Consolidati...

Re: grey iron

I agree with Tristan. Both of our RGS20 locos at GGLS have grooves worn into the cast iron wheels. I have put tires on one of the locos so far and will have to do the other one next summer, no doubt. I used DOM tubing from Speedy Metals. With about 0.009" interference, the tires just drop on when he...

Re: Steam Dome Throttle

If you want a rotating throttle valve rod instead of a pull type rod, then use a right angle ball valve. 4847K12 from McMaster is the one I used. It operates like any other ball valve, of course, but one port goes up into the dome, the other forward through the front tube sheet. A little modificatio...

I've used flex hones for this type of polishing.
Flex hones come that small??
Flex hones start about 3/16" or 4mm. Cute little things.

Re: Cab roof material?

The references I see state that the roofing material was 'composition.' Supposed to be fireproof. I didn't find anything that said strips, sheets, or what. I did see a reference to Johns-Manville as a supplier and that implies asbestos composition. The Baldwin archives are in Texas somewhere and may...

Re: small scall fittings

PM Research has 3/16. Otherwise, you might have to go to the UK for smaller ones. Steamfittings.co.uk has a few in 1/8 and 5/32 for instance, and there are probably other suppliers as well.
