I live in Quilcene on Hood Canal. I recently joined Kitsap Live Steamers and Ken Olsen has been very helpful. I am using his spreadsheet for the boiler calculations.

Todd
you are in good hands; I used the same spreadsheet for mine

Re: Boiler welding advice.

Todd: Make sure you understand your State/local pressure vessel requirements. Material specifications and welding practices make a difference in whether or not you might be allowed to steam a boiler in your region. If no local regulations, then consider if you would travel to other regions with you...

To clarify your picture, are those two brake valves from John (Jack) Kelso, or from Jack Bodenmann?
I thought you have Kelso's valves.
Thanks,
RussN
Mine are John Kelso's,

Re: H6 brake valves

Thanks Jack, your drawing is 99% of how my cars are setup, I added a quick release valve on each car so the train line big holes at each car creating a VERY controlled stop in emergency, Russ can speak to this :). I have to say its pretty cool to hear all cars pop during my pre-trip brake test. The ...

Re: H6 brake valves

Unless some genius has made it recently, the H6 does not work in 1/8 scale. If you want real automatic WABCO type brakes, I would pick a bigger scale, or plan to use straight air for a very long while. The smallest functional automatic air brakes I've ever seen/heard of (and I have seen them in pie...

Re: H6 brake valves

automatic brakes have many advantages over straight air,, 1) early warning for any defects in the pipe or cars. 2) smooth control if you have more than 6 cars. 3) faster application in an emergency. I run Straight air on the locomotive, tender and fuel car and auto air on the rest of the train. imho...

Re: Dual gauging of wheels?

you already have it figured out, using a 11 ga u shaped shim,, loosen the nut, pull the shim and slide the wheel in .125 at each wheel, done, to go back, loosen the nut. slide the wheel out, install shim and tighten the nut... but i will add, it would be best to offer enough run to double nut the wh...

Re: Sizing air brake cylinders and levers

Im planning to have a body hung cylinder with prototypical linkage. Sounds like the 4:1 total reduction works well, then can just play with the cylinder size to get the appropriate force. I am also going to have a system pressure regulator on the locomotive. Was planning on running 40psi on the tra...

Re: Sizing air brake cylinders and levers

are you planning on using a prototypical design for the brake rigging? if so, the ratio on the truck levels is normally 2 to 1, and the linkage at the center of the car is 2 to 1 or close to it iirc. i use a 1.125 bore double acting cylinder with this setup. for riding cars and .5 bore cylinder for ...
