Re: Drilling holes at an angle

Start the hole with a mounted grinding stone the same diameter as the drill needed in the drill press until a flat surface is revealed. Then switch to the drill. The grinding stone will remove material thus eliminating any side pressure.

Re: Taps and Dies - balance between cost and quality

Bill, it wasn't an unreasonable question. I do use the wrong side from time to time, deliberately, to get to a shoulder. There's no budget for fancy tooling. I'm a volunteer on the battleship restoration. They supply the material and the dies; everything else is volunteer and sometimes out of my po...

Re: Amazing machine work

I believe Packard supplied some 12-cylinder inline engines for the PT boats and some rescue boats.

Simichrome polish was supplied to Volkwagen owners to polish the chrome bumpers.

Re: Polishing Aluminium

Doesn't the reflectibility of the metal depend on the temperature of the light source used?

Re: Delrin bushing

so...how long did the original bushing made from whatever it was -> last? It doesn't have one. The hole is just larger than the mast we are using. That's probably good anyway, as I think both the mast and the tube are aluminum, which is pretty much the worst combination of shaft and bearing. I've g...

Re: Milling machine identification

Attn: Bill Shields
I understand you have a Select milling machine. I have the same one, (model OB). How do you like it? I bought mine sometime during the early 90's. I put a DRO on it and it is a great little machine.

Re: Cement ties

I have been following this discussion with interest although I am not a live steamer. I noticed the use of plywood and the problem with its use. I think if you use a form of plywood called MDO, you would eliminate the problem of water absorption and subsequent removal. MDO has a plastic like surface...

Re: Mitutoyo Digital Caliper

I lost the display on my 6" Mit. I called Mitutoyo and the rep told me how to fix it. I tried everything, but my display is dead. That being the case said the rep; you need a new read head(replace caliper). The caliper has never been mistreated; always kept clean and in its case. The caliper wa...

Re: Ultrasonic cleaners - what can I use for a container

Plastic works in microwave ovens. It should also work in an ultrasonic cleaner.
