Re: Alloy similar to keys

To make the pawl/hook,roughly 1/2". Though the more I think about it, adding a wear surface to the mating part would be better. That's why I'm asking about if silicon bronze wears like phosphor bronze would.

Re: Alloy similar to keys

Looking into material costs for the part I need to make made me choke so I’m thinking of taking a different approach. Could silicon bronze be a decent choice for a wear surface? The original plan was to make the hook of the pawl out of the phosphor bronze, but I need a 2” x 0.5” x 3” plate to fit al...

Re: Alloy similar to keys

Thank you. I don’t see leaded available in small quantities anywhere I usually buy so I’ll see how the regular works out.

Re: Alloy similar to keys

If you want the part to be sacrificial, what is the other material it is going to be in contact with made from? The material it would be in contact with will most likely be steel. It would slide along the steel bar and then drop down into a notch. Kind of like a jack stand. I have a post office key...

Alloy similar to keys

Anyone know what alloy would be the closest to what house keys are made of? I tried looking online and I see nickle silver and brass being mentioned, but nothing specific about the types. I’ve really never worked with brass so I have no reference point. I’ve got a pawl type mechanism to build and I’...

Re: Weld nuts

In a pinch, I've drilled and tapped such a thing from solid rod; that was put into a through hole and welded on both sides. Which worked well. I actually considered that but it would make a lot more work. If they bite on the quote I think I’ll just get a bag and do some destructive testing. They’re...

Re: Weld nuts

Have you considered Rivnuts? I did. I use them occasionally at the day job but I’ve had mixed results over the years. The wide head diameter of the weld nuts are actually a bonus in this application. I’m just wondering how well the threads hold up if someone gets a little ham fisted with a wrench. ...

Weld nuts

Somebody asked me to build them a huge custom bed frame from steel tubing. It needs to be bolted together and to keep the weight down I'm using 1/8" wall tube. Being so thin doesn't leave much meat for tapping the tube directly. I was looking around McMaster the other day and stumbled across th...

Re: Clearpath SDs

It's all a matter of what you are willing to pay. Truthfully, very little haha. The main reason I was looking into the SDs was simplicity. From what I can find it looked like I bolt it in, tune it and go. No need to completely change my setup over from the Gecko and Mach3 config. I'll look deeper i...

Re: 1/2” steel

Make sure you've got a dust mask and more than one wheel on hand.

Jason over at Fireball Tool did a test with cutoff wheels to see which technique lasts longer. I started doing it this way and it definitely makes the wheels last much longer.
