Re: Safe to Grind Tungsten on Bench Grinder?

If you have the newer tungsten electrodes, have at and grind on what ever you want. But if you happen to have some old stock electrodes, that contain thorium, Do not grind in the open. The thorium containing tungsten is safe to handle, but the grinding dust is a alpha, beta emitter(radioactive).

All the wheels except for the top three are for a tool post grinder, and a big one at that.

Re: Templestik

If you are using the white, or black Handy flux, it will about tell you your temperature. If you watch it close it goes thru various stages before you reach soldering temp. When you first apply heat it will bubble, then turn white. Then as more heat is applied, it will start to ball up in clear bead...

Re: Is Devcon WR-2 supposed to be low friction?

Now that there has been some resolution of your problem, I will tell a little story about the WR-Devcon. The Devcon was originally (so I was told) developed for the Navy to repair bronze salt water pump castings. After a period of time the castings erode on the inside from the abrasive nature of the...

MSC Ordering

For Those of you that still have your old ENCO catalog, KEEP IT. For example, I was trying to order a 16oz bottle of LPS Tapmatic Gold. If you go to MSC's website, you will only find a 5Gallon bucket, or 55 gallon barrel of it, nothing smaller. If you take the old Enco number, and plug it into the M...

Re: Increasing the diameter of a hole

On most heavy equipment, there are bushing sleeves welded in to the end of the arms. You would have to burn out the old sleeves, then weld in new ones. New pins and sleeves can be had at your dealer.

Re: 1 1/4 steel balls

Check out the mining supply co's. Look for ballmill balls. They are used for the final milling of some types of ore, to reduce it to a powder.

Re: Dumore TPG differences

I would suggest that you go to the Dumore web site, and see what models are still in production. I would look for one that is still in production, as Dumore does not support some of the older ones. One thing you need to think about,,,you can always use a small grinder on a large lathe, but not a lar...

Re: New Brown and Sharpe?

You might want to think about the SCHERR-TUMICO line of tools. They have very good mics, and other tools, and there made here in the USA.
I have several of there mics, as well as a vernier caliper, and consider them equal to the old Starrets.

Re: Superelevation techniques

Here at the Nevada Southern Live Steamers track, we initially super elevated all of the curves. However we have gone back and taken all of the super elevation out of the track. The reason we did this, is we found that the public were fighting the elevation, and causing derailments. After that was do...

Re: New Guy: Where do I start?

I would recommend that you build something of the size that you want from the start. You will need at least a 10" lathe, and a milling machine of some type. Stay away from the 3in1 machines, they will drive you nuts using them. I concur with Harloc, start with one of the Kozo A-3's. As an alter...
