Boiler to Smoke box alignment

Fellow Live Steamers, I am doing some work on my smoke box to boiler connection and am concerned about getting the smoke box aligned rotationally with the rest of the engine. Not being one to eyeball it, can anyone recommend any ways to get alignment BEFORE I start drilling holes that mount the two ...

Re: Allen Models needs votes.

I will second the Scotts suggestion for the short wheel base 4-4-0 based on the mogul main rod. I would also like to throw in two cents on what a fast first build the 4-4-0 is. There are several things that make this a easier build than the 4-6-0, side rods, reduced braking components (jam brakes) F...

Re: Tender Tank

Guys I am hearing a lot of suggestions for building a tender that leaks and then sealing it with sealant, solder, welding, etc. Is it that hard to make water tight riveted seams? Didn't the real guys do this on just about every tender, boiler, tank car for almost 100 years?? Has anyone actually made...

Re: Live-in Railroad club

I would not knock 4.75. I have a 2-6-2 and would like to see some three rail track. 7.x to 4.x diamonds at when the Narrow gauge crosses the standard gauge. I can't say that I would really buy into mixed steaming facilities and yards, as three rail switches get complicated, but I can deffinately it ...

Automatic air brakes - tripple valve, etc.. Lets get something that works that we can all use that doesn't break the bank.

Water Spouts

Does anyone in the abyss have any pictures of the steel water spouts built by Richard at the old NGLS in Duluth, Ga?

Re: Signals: Stick relay....

Its certainly nice having an all integrated product, but for my nickel I am trying to steer clear of proprietary, integrated circuits. The prototype used simple polar relays for APB for almost a hundred years, that's my thinking and what I am trying to recreate. If we want to throw technology, I cou...

Re: Truck bolsters and draft gear sizes....

Springs In Draft: The evolution of the draft gear brought us to the following 1) compression of the train is sprung and 2) tension of the train is rigid. This is the case for modern draft gear today, and most earlier stuff developed in that direction. You can find examples of where we spring in both...

Re: Standards and common practices

How much braking force: Wait a sec.... Brakes on an empty car should be on the edge of locking up at FULL application or emergency. This way all cars brake with the same behavior regardless of their empty or loaded weight. I think that is how the prototype does it. That being said, brake size (cylin...
