Re: Ballast tipple design request

I will cast a vote both for and against the grain trailer. We have one of these on our railroad. While the capacity and plug and playability (remove axles, put on blocks) is really good, the general aesthetics and hazards of loading are major detractors. The bin, even off its axles is full height fo...

Looking for Hat Section for Car frame

Has anyone out there had any luck find a roll former that has hat sections that can be used for a frame of a car? I am thinking about 2" tall x 1.5 wide.
The idea is to be a little more prototypical than using 1x2 tube.

The picture is a cushion sill from a N&W caboose in N.Carolina.

Re: Small Diesel engines for motive power

We had a visitor show up at CSME last year that had a Lamborgini diesel engine in his switcher. The other one I saw a while back was a guy in who had an A-B pair of NYC E8s with a Peugeot engine in it. The cool part was he plumbed the exhaust back to the B unit so both stacks were smoking! And yet a...

Re: Track Standards

To tell you the truth, I would put in the super elevation because it just looks cool.

Re: Track Standards

STRR, True, superelevation is designed with 3 degrees of freedom; speed, radius, mass. Any designed curve (level or superelevated) will have an interelation between speed and mass as the radius is fixed for a given location. The prototype fights this same problem as you can hear speed detectors that...

Re: Spring rigging question

Here's a picture of a 1930 Baldwin Decapod in Winder Ga. I am sure this is basically the same treatment as the USRA 0-8-0. If you export the picture and zoom in you can see the right most connection to the spring is a pin through the spring pack like the ones that hook things together when the leave...

Re: Mogul Kit Differences

Well I think that any project where you have any existing prototype is a great one to do. When in doubt, go look at the prototype!... Many of the Little Engines models are Southern Pacific prototypes. You might find the LE mogul is close to your prototype. The drivers I know is wrong, to small I thi...

Re: Spark arrester design

Do these things really work? Last time I was running at night I saw a lot of spark going up through the stack and cinder trap... which makes me ask how effective they are. Here the one on my engine. The Costagon cabbage stack traps cylinder by deflecting the flow of air, which I would think is a mor...

Re: Track Standards

I will cast a vote in support of super elevation. Having worked through a couple of curves I feel it is well worth the effort. Tools: In the past I have used a plumbers level that has fractional inch drop / 12". I recommend using 3 targets 1) level, 2) minor tilt (say 1/4 in 12") and 3) major tilt (...
