Re: Train brakes for the little Mogul

Something is not right. If the wheels are locking up then something isn't free in the rigging or the steam application is just to much. Any idea how much pressure is being sent? I will argue that when your brakes work correctly, you can lock the engine down even at full throttle, and you will be abl...

Re: Train brakes for the little Mogul

Back to the original thread... Your steam brake system on your mogul can be made to work very well. All you need to do is equalize the break beams. Its a hand full of parts that you could do in a day or two. The lap valve is inneffective for steam though. I fixed my brake on my Allen 10 and can grac...

Re: Train brakes for the little Mogul

If you are looking for a economical solution for an out of sight, out of scale air tank, try using an emptied propane bottle. Most have a removable 10-32 thread fitting which can be replaced with appropriate fittings from clippard. The guys at Mill Creek have been doing it for years. The only down s...

Re: How to Dry out a boiler for winter storage?

Art Olds once told me he would put water soluble machine oil in the tender on the last tank. Not sure how it worked.

Freight Track identification

Does anyone recognize this freight truck bolster? The aluminum broke. I would like to find a replacement.

Re: Steam down in the Atlanta Georgia Area?

If you want to get out and drive around some there are a lot of static displays a little further out but several within an hour or so of Atlanta. Gainsville, Winder, Jeffersonville, Marietta. etc..

Don't forget to go to the Varsity; Dogs, rings, and an FO.

Looking for small sqaure driver

Does anyone out there have a source for a 7" driver (57" prototype) with a SQUARE counter weight, 12 spokes (4 on the counter weight, 8 open)?

It was there when I came up for the EP spring meet. Took a photo. It was in the dining room then.

Re: Smokebox Fabrication

If you are trying to meet an odd size (like 7 or 9 inches) I believe tube is available in that size. On my 440 I am thinking I will sleeve over a piece of 9 over the 8.375 boiler shell.

Re: Allen Steam Brake Cylinder

Can anyone explain what the prototype configuration of steam brakes is? Valve type? surely there is some kind of purging mechanism on the cylinder or steam line.

Re: Allen Steam Brake Cylinder

On my ten there was no bleed on the steam side. It was done through the brake lap valve. It works, but takes forever since the ports in the valve are tiny. No application issue, but takes forever to release when when used as a parking brake. Lap valve is pointless on steam of course. I believe a con...
