Re: steam dome gasket

Proptotype locos used copper o rings for a gasket. Usually 1/4" round copper. I have used 12 guage copper wire silver soldered at the joint very successfully. Just cut a groove about 1/2 the wire dia. deep and a little wider than the wire.

Re: Cylinder head material?

I make all my cylinder blocks fabricated steel with bronze liners and Rulon rings ( hydraulic cylinder rings ). The cab forward is still in very good condition after 34 years. Re: Old subject - stainless cons for minature boilers

Thank God I didn't know about all the drawbacks of stainless steel when I built my cabforward. I had access to some 1 inch 304 ss so used it for my tubes. That was in 1975. They are still doing fine. I was told by some of the old heads at LA live steamers that my boiler would not make enough steam f...

Re: common wealth long frame trucks

The Commonwealth trucks you need are very different from mine. The leaf springs that are on each side are on the swing motion bolster and are hung with hangers that attach to the truck cross transoms. The humps that are on the top of the side frames near each end encase two coil springs each that res...
